DESIGN NAME: Interactive Waterfall
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Architectural Component
INSPIRATION: This installation is a metaphor of interaction with waterfall using flexible bead strings. Waterfall is a running natural scene that people are willing to jump into to enjoy the summer coolness. The interaction between the waterfall and people creates a delightful involvement. The streams of water can be considered as a shared remark to invite people. The remark can be formed as an installation to play with. The string is pulled in terms just like people playing with water in summer.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The interactive architecture component is a physical social media to gather people around. The installation comprises module in single or multiple displays of numbers, appearances, or orientations. Paired installations can be placed in a vertical manner and different orientations to let the bead string running from one set to another to create a conversation in between. The interaction between them creates a visual effect associated with sounds. The number of sets to be deployed is not limited.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This installation acts like a catalyst between people to break the iceberg or to start a conversation near a coffee table, outside an elevator, or at one end of a corridor. Each cube or set of cubes comes with one or more bead strings that travel inside the cube or through the recessed notches on different surface. Two paths can be pulled and running at the same time even in the opposite directions. Frames can be placed side by side or in an order that mimic a complicated water stages.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in September 2016 in Taipei, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This installation is made of a 3D-printed notched rectangular block, two intersecting steel frames, and acrylic blocks. Magnets are used inside the frames as a surface friendly mechanism on interior or exterior metal surfaces. Each part of block has to be smooth enough to ensure a smooth pull. Tests were conducted to create the cube with appropriate size of curvature, gap, and diameter of holes by a 3D modeling program. The two intersected steel frames and transparent acrylic blocks mimic water. The steel frames are recycled from picture frames purchased in flea market.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: A single set of installation comes in the size of 25.5 cm (width) x 25.5 cm (height) x 17.5 cm (depth). The notched cube is 5.7 cm (width) x 12.5 cm (height) x 5.7 cm (depth).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A research was made to find out which mathematical program can create the desirable model. The final choice was k3dsurf and Geomagic Studio.
CHALLENGE: Challenges were encountered and solved in designing magnet attachment, planning modules, translating metaphor, and matching bead strings. The surface-friendly mechanism is made by magnet-based attachments for any architectural steel surface. No screws or penetration fasten components are needed. The cubes and frames create the depth and hierarchy of a waterfall metaphor. The path must run smoothly before or after routing in different configurations and directions. Notch size and gap for strings is parametrically designed. The size and shape of beads is selected carefully for a smooth movement. A variety of colors and textures were explored.
