DESIGN NAME: Dancing Cubes
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Theme Installation
INSPIRATION: The inspiration came from the study of ant. One of the most impressive skills is that a group of ants can form a sphere to survive a severe situation like floating above flood. This installation applies the observed interconnection mechanism for a module design that can be embedded together for display purpose.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Dancing cubes represent a miniature of a society where people meet people and dance. A base cube unit is designed in a symmetric free form configuration with three-way holes on each corner to accommodate subjects. A self-expanded connection mechanism was developed to make a cube reach out in three perpendicular directions. The free form configuration with notches makes the connection similar to interlaced bodies. The arrangement of holes creates a structure of accommodation for linear parts.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Each module has small round holes connecting eight quadrants as a perfect holding location for flowers with stems. A larger unit comprises six small modules. The unit creates a preferable tilted posture to extend visual depth to all orientations. Two larger units can use an intermediate unit to create a larger unit of eleven modules in two versions with zero or ninety degree rotation. The connectivity is virtually unlimited. All the units can be oriented in a set or multiple sets with combinations of colors to match appropriate theme.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This 3D file was originally created 2018.07 in Taipei. Various types of configuration were explored. The specific set was thickened and opened up as assembled parts in 2018. The duration was about three months of intensive works.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The two axial cubes are fastened in a soft manner by an elastic member and four cubes are pinned at four corners. Elastic strings go through holes aligned in the center and four units are inlaid on four corners. The elastic property enables all units connected with the least amount of accessories and matching colors. No glues or screws were used. The cubes were by a mathematical program and made by a 3D printer.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The larger unit is 6 cm (W) x 6 cm (D) x 6 cm (H).
The smaller unit is 3 cm (W) x 3 cm (D) x 3 cm (H).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Researches were made to the unit configuration for aesthetic and dynamic appearance. Fastening mechanism was also explored to avoid intrusion type of connection. A flexible type of connection mechanism is needed.
CHALLENGE: The distribution of string has to be well-planned to assure a balance of compression on each corner. There are two types of end stops. The first one with string route three sides leads to uneven distribution of compression. The second type utilizes the notch-like end and its contour shape to connect two units from the opposite faces.
