PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Gas Cooker

INSPIRATION:
The kitchen counters are required to be prepared before cooking. The process of cutting, chopping, mixing, resting, filtering can be done with difficulty on small counters. The countertop gas cookers are 60 x 60 cm in size. The existing countertop gas cookers on the market are of a fixed size and occupies a large area on the counters even when it is not needed. MORE respond to the need for more counter space when it is essential.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
MORE is the design of a dual cooker set which can be opened and closed as necessary to increase the usage area of the counter. It is considered as a solution for trying to obtain new workspaces in the counter by continuously changing the place of the pots and the other necessary goods that placed on the counter by only folding one wing of the cooker when necessary. In this way, larger work areas will be provided when needed in places with small counters.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
MORE includes two foldable gas cooker. Due to the cylindrical joints on the rear surfaces, two wings can be folded upwards. There are two cylinders nested at the rear. Inner one is for gas passage and outer one for wing movement. In order to increase the usage area of the counter, two cooker wings can be closed on the wall cover. The opened wing is positioned on the counter with its own weight and will be ready to cook. When more cooker is needed, the other wing is opened and lowered on to the counter. Thus, the wings of the gas cooker can be opened and closed according to the required work area.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in May 2018 in Ankara, Turkey and finished in January 2019 in Ankara Turkey.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The dual cooker set is connected to a cylindrical joint at the rear. This joint allows both cooker sets to move and allows the gas to be transported to both vessels by the gas pipe passing through it.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Length: 58cm, Width:53 cm, Height: 12 cm. 9 Kg. 0,040 m3 Its main body is enameled. It is easy to color and can be used and produced in many different colors.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Qualitative research was conducted to discover the necessary work spaces for daily cooking behavior and habits of people by observation and interviewing techniques. The participants were at different ages and genders. The critical details were observed during cooking about the necessary work space, pre-preparation processes, kitchen and counter sizes. The size of the counter used in small houses and the requirements for providing the necessary preparation area for cooking were decisive.

CHALLENGE:
There are cylindrical joints in the lower rear parts of the foldable wings. While these joints provide mobility, they also create a protective way to distribute the gas between the wings by connecting the required gas to the cooker set. It required a creative solution to ensure the mobility of the wings along with the gas path that would remain stable.

Bulent Unal

PROFILE:
Bülent Ünal is a graduate of Middle East Technical University, where he received a BA in Industrial Design in between 1989-1993. After his military service, he launched his career in Ankara as a co-founder, general manager and art director of a company specialized in the field of design and advertising in between 1996-2011. In 2011, his expertise on 3D architectural visualization allowed him to include projects in one of the international company ECOU located in Libya for 5 months. In 2013, he received his master degree in the department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Atılım University. After his graduation, hefinished the Architecture PhD program of the same University and he has been studied on architectural design. He is Head of the Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts Design and Architecture at Atılım University since 2013. He is married and a father of one.
