DESIGN NAME: Andromeda
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cocktail Table
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this project stems from a design aspect that I was first introduced to by my father: using end grain and resin to harmoniously allow the natural beauty of engrain to speak for itself. This was something I felt needed to be explored further, so I decided to push my current understanding of the art form by evolving my use of end grain as a tool to create stimulating symmetrical designs, and add a dimension to an already intricate art form: nature itself.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Andromeda earned her name from the feeling of looking into space. The recycled end grain discs found on the table's surface are surrounded in a midnight blue resin, forming a galaxy-like pattern beneath a gloss or satin finish, captivating anyone who stands in her presence. As each disc of end grain is unique, each piece by nature is a limited edition. The table sits on a sleek 3-piece spaceship-style base, which packs flat for shipping when deconstructed, and is easily assembled by the client.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The glossy mirror finish on Andromeda presents a transformative experience while gazing at her surface. Whether focusing on the design as a whole, or the deep rings within each individual disc of end grain, Andromeda will shift one's perception, allowing the curiosity of what's possible to run wild. Blurring the line between art and furniture, Andromeda is a fully functional cocktail table sure to grab the attention of anyone in the room.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in the summer of 2017, and was ready to be presented to the public in November of 2017

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Andromeda's table top incorporates our patent pending process of stylistically embedding cross-cuts of recycled wooden end grain in resin, which we color ourselves using combinations of liquid pigment. The top's edge is inlayed with a brass wire, and set on a 3-piece base consisting of two brass legs and a single resin leg, color-matched to the midnight blue top. The table packs flat when shipped, and comes with an assembly manual, two pins, four screws, and a hex key.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I currently design and produce alone, so my primary objective was to figure out a way to create a scalable process that would allow me to fulfill my vision of using end grain as a "paint brush" within resin. Ultimately taking two years, perfecting this process required lots of internet research, strategic thinking to minimize risk (materials are expensive), prototyping via trial & error, and a relentless attitude - as there are many variables involved in working with resin.
CHALLENGE: Coming from a woodworking background, my biggest challenge was understanding resin and how its chemistry interacts with wood. My goal was to create a product with little to no imperfections, so I needed to master all aspects of the step-by-step process in order to maintain complete quality control. Another challenge/vision of mine was to create a base that could be packed flat when deconstructed and easily assembled into its final form.
