DESIGN NAME: Buffering
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Poster
INSPIRATION: This project was inspired by a very common feeling. How do I understand and think about long periods of waiting in my life? This recurring theme had surfaced many times in our lives, as designers, and we wanted to express visually the complex emotions we had felt in response to these times of patience.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As we began to develop our concept, one word stuck out, Buffering. Whether in regards to a website, a video, or an image, buffering is a simple word which evokes vivid emotional and technological images. We paired the chunky pixelization of a buffering image with bright colors and expressive lines, emphasizing the beauty and hope which have shone through the challenging circumstances which we have both faced.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: If the entire world were totally bathed in light, would it be beautiful? Would we see that light as comforting, hopeful, inspiring? Or would light succumb to familiarity, falling into the ranks of ubiquity alongside gravity, oxygen, even matter itself? It is the contrast of night which gives dawn its beauty. We prize and treasure the daylight because we know that, within hours, it will evade our grasp.
Beauty is the child of contrast, unliving and unbreathing if not for its frightening mother. This unlikely pair is formed and reformed constantly, reincarnating each time with new faces. Silence births symphonies from cacophony. Unfamiliarity creates allies from acquaintances. Buffering delivers data from darkness. Waiting molds pleasure from pain.
Like mother and daughter, every happy ending is born out of silence. If only we could peek past the curtain of time and spy the majesty being born from our patience. Then, perhaps, we could understand the beauty of buffering.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2018 and finished in May 2018 in Deerfield.
