| DESIGN NAME: Asel PRIMARY FUNCTION: Office Cubical INSPIRATION: The inspiration came from to break down the task oriented, cold atmosphere work environment that is machinelike programmed. We wanted to establish a relationship with home where we feel most comfortable and we are truly be ourselves. While we are sleeping, we feel comfortable away from stress and we wrap ourselves with coverlet. A cozy working environment is provided by referring to the coverlet with the design of the stitches on decorative design touches the material and the folding movement. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: ASEL is a working cubicle for use in open plan office environments. In contrast to the traditional and stereotyped, cold atmosphere work environment, it aims to provide a work environment that brings a cozy home experience with the coexistence of felt and wood, and to increase the performance and motivation of peoples. The surfaces of cubicle are designed to respond the basic needs of a working environment such as a pen case, a note and report board, without the need for an extra piece. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The surfaces refers to coverlet partially screen people occupying in the same environment from each other. Based on the empirical evidences, the total height is kept to the extent that it will provide visual privacy but not to prevent communication between people. The color of the inner surfaces is designed as green, which affects the performance of the people positively during study. The layout of the open office environments can be varied by combining the cubicles in different arrangements. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea of designing a working cubicle began in September 2018 in Ankara, and the project Asel created in December 2018 in Ankara, Turkey. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The structure, desk and legs are made from natural beech wood, low gloss polished finish with all simple and standard joinery. The structure forming the partition surfaces is covered with felt to create a cozy working atmosphere. By the use of stitches on felt surfaces, a decorative approach is created. The inner surfaces is in green color and green shows itself in stitches used in the gray colored outer surfaces; while gray shows itself in stitches used in green colored inner surfaces. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions of desk: 170 cm width x 60 cm depth (front desk) - 30 cm depth (side desks) x 75 cm height. Dimensions of cubicle: 180 cm width x 90 cm side surfaces x 135 cm total height TAGS: Office space, open work space, cubicle design, partition design, coziness RESEARCH ABSTRACT: People spend more time at their offices than their homes. Thus, providing comfort conditions in working environments is critical to increase production and labor performance, and also employees' perceptual performance. Especially by the transition of office environments to a modern open plan layout, the ASEL is designed for creating a cozy and homey working environment in open offices. By doing so, the machinelike cold atmosphere working environments will breaks down. CHALLENGE: The challenge was to enhance the design approach that reflects a home experience by combining a working office space with a cozy homey atmosphere. NAME: Bulent Unal PROFILE: Bülent Ünal is a graduate of Middle East Technical University, where he received a BA in Industrial Design in between 1989-1993. After his military service, he launched his career in Ankara as a co-founder, general manager and art director of a company specialized in the field of design and advertising in between 1996-2011. In 2011, his expertise on 3D architectural visualization allowed him to include projects in one of the international company ECOU located in Libya for 5 months. In 2013, he received his master degree in the department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Atılım University. After his graduation, hefinished the Architecture PhD program of the same University and he has been studied on architectural design. He is Head of the Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts Design and Architecture at Atılım University since 2013. He is married and a father of one. |
