DESIGN NAME: Pro-cyclone Modular System (EC23)
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vacuum Cleaner
INSPIRATION: The ideology behind designing EC23 is to remove unnecessary spaces, features and adornment to make the product compact, while focusing on decreasing the frequency of maintenance to the filters, therefore creating a user-friendly product. Improving the living conditions of people has been the goal of the company. With the advent of environmental awareness, we also made the conscious design decision to produce EC23 without any spray painting, reducing the environmental impact of a product meant to tidy up the environment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: EC23 imbues a modular system, distinctive centrifugal filtration technology and meticulous user-centric design to create a compact and ergonomic handheld vacuum cleaner. Its distinctive 3-axis centrifugal system ensures filtration efficiency without incurring any disposable wastage. Its compact design makes it comfortable to use and easy to manoeuvre. The 'Dust Captor' is the first of its kind- a modular filtration unit. Once attached to the vacuum, it provides another level of filtration which exponentially lowers the amount of dust that reaches the fabric/sponge filter, decreasing the frequency of maintenance greatly. The modularity also allows users to customize the vacuum’s filtration/weight to every specific cleaning task. The EC23 & Dust Captor modular attachment attempts to lay the foundation of modularity in our entire product chain for future strategic design planning. With the modular connective heads designed into it, each subsequent design will be able to share the same accessories and parts. This modularity aids the pre-production, design phase, after-sales service and the entire product chain subsequently.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The ability to attach the modular filter maximizes the filtration capability of the vacuum cleaner. This feature exponentially decreases the dust caught in the final filter, decreasing the frequency of the need for maintenance, which is the most cumbersome task of using a vacuum cleaner. The 'screw-cap'; design of the dust canisters and filter cover allows for hassle-free removal and disposal of the refuse. It also allows the user to wash the canister with ease without requiring tools for dismantlement.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in early 2016. Designed and developed by Eluxgo Holdings in Singapore.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: While the vacuum cleaner's suction power performance and its usability is our utmost priority, we felt that the next best thing for us to focus on was the effectiveness of the filtration and the filters longevity. We recognized the hassle of having to maintain and clean the filters frequently so we aim to minimize that.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Throughout the company's history of vacuum cleaner production and sales, we learnt through experience and customer feedback that the filters are the most prone to damage from wear and tear. Also, cleaning/changing the filter is the most tedious task of using vacuum cleaners. Thus, using modular filter in conjunction results in an exponentially lower amount of dust reaching the final fabric/sponge filter, decreasing the frequency of maintenance greatly.
CHALLENGE: Our biggest challenge was to balance the aesthetic aspects and usability within the parameters of practical issues.
We had to consider various factors- making it compact, reducing unnecessary weight and spaces, comfort of use, sufficiently strong suction and ease of maintenance- to improve the product’s usability. These factors, have to be balanced with practical issues like battery capacity, motor and circuitry allowance, heat dissipation allowance and possibility of mass-production.
