DESIGN NAME: Letter Back Rocker
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Rocking Chair
INSPIRATION: The use of Windsor Technology with rocking action compliments the unusual juxtaposition of parts. The economy of manufacture is made strong by the use of woods that best take and transmit the strengths of each part.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Hardwood Rocking Chair with Oak legs and spindles, Ash Crest, Poplar Seat, Holly Rockers and Myrtle Arms assembles in the manner of Windsor Chairs. The Red Rubber sole on the Rockers creates a smooth and quiet action. The Front Legs pass through the seat with a wider step-out under the seat providing strong support for cantilevered seat.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Sit back and rock to your favorite music or read your current book. The motion of the rocker curves is softened with the red rubber soles. Both sitter and viewer are transformed through the intellectual challenge of the simple but intricate form into simple but complex lightness of being.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design of this Letter Back Rocker encompassed a 2 year process of experimentation in ergonomics, materials and joinery. Finished in December of 2018, in North Carolina USA, the addition of the Red Sole counter-balances the natural Myrtle branches of the arm sparking the delight of rocking.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research can begin with Making. Making a chair, making a poem, "From Greek poetes, ‘maker, poet’, from poiein ‘create’.
Material, joinery and finish are the language of making.
40 years of research into elements of furniture making have mixed with poetry, literature, astronomy and sciences to invest each furniture piece with a balance of "Commodity, Firmness and Delight."
CHALLENGE: The comfort, structure and elegance of the traditional Windsor Rocking Chair are challenged to be re-ordered in their meaning and purpose. The "King Post' and 'Front Leg' are one piece of White Oak with ledge under the Poplar Seat for firmness. Extensive study of Windsor traditional materials and construction allowed the designer/maker to create a folly of parts with commodity and delight.
