DESIGN NAME: The Two Spirit Project
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Themed Lounge Area
INSPIRATION: The project was the creation of a themed lounge area based on a particular patterned fabric. The pattern was redesigned by our team and composed the inspiration for the project, as it draws direct elements from the culture of native Americans providing a wide scope of cultural background to be applied and to work with. All the products and the ambiance of the space created were under the same line. The ambiance was of a special focus point, as part of the points of communicating the design, was trying to convey parts of the mysticism involved in the culture.
The Two Spirit project - the tale of a tribe - a gift from the Creator, born with the spirits of both genders in one body. Traditionally, Two Spirit people were considered lucky and fearless. They held positions within their tribes that gave them great respect. Europeans who arrived in the Native American Garden of Eden in the mid 15th century witnessed for the first time a land so unspoiled. In keeping with European prejudices held against Natives, the Spanish Catholic monks destroyed most of the Aztec codices to eradicate traditional Native beliefs and history. The first tradition they targeted to eliminate was the one of the Two Spirit people, since their kind of gender variance was not tolerated. Europeans and eventually Euro-Americans demanded all people to conform to their prescribed two gender roles.
In this project setting, our first priority was to emphasize the importance of being able to see the world through the eyes of both genders at the same time and considering the necessity of respecting diversity and honoring the ethics and traditions of native Americans. We decided to revive various objects of their everyday life related to their way of living, norms and beliefs.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a Native American themed project composed by diversities. Fascinated by the Two Spirit people, where a person was able to see the world through the eyes of both genders, the same concept was applied creating this design through the eyes of a male and a female; combining luxury and soft material like a velvet alongside hard-technical ones suitable for outdoors, as well as modifying the classic usage, form or even personality of each product. Where architecture fails to impress, this project as a whole, is able to stand into any space and completely transform it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The products combined together work in perfect harmony to create a scenery, but each one of them is able to stand alone, be fully functional and easily transferable; arranged differently. The primary form of the modular sofa is to be a central element, where its center is the back of the sofa, however all its elements are movable, changing its shape and usage and the way the users interact between them. The zips allow the cushions to be disposable. The tent apart from a design object, can either be used as a teepee for kids to play or adults to relax. The benches’ size is ideal for sitting or lying down.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project started in July 2018 and finished in November 2018 in Athens, and was exhibited in 100% Hotel Show, in Athens in November 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: First thing we had do was to work alongside La Maison Pierre Frey, and redesign the pattern of a design already found in the 2018 Arapahos Collection. After the design was agreed and the customized production of the fabric proceeded, we had to design and make all the products from scratch. Two more fabrics from the same brand were used as well as an outdoor anti-slip material to complete and upholster all the products. All the frames, foams and wood were of customized designs and sizes.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research was done mainly on the Native American culture; their personal belongings, milestones in their history, their lifestyle and symbolizations. Fascinated by the Two Spirit people, we had to go even deeper, as it was an aspect in their lives that shown how ahead of their time and even for our mindset they really were. All the research was done through the internet.
CHALLENGE: The greatest challenge faced, was to be able to blend the culture of Native American people, reviving it in a more up-to date way, with today’s material creating products that will be useful and unique in our culture and lifestyle. Also combining the views and ideas of our different perspective of life, as the two-spirit people were able to do so, creating a harmonious and balanced outcome. Lastly, using just one bold pattern was one of the biggest risks as the palette of colors was limited and its repetition on products had to be balanced.
