RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In attempting to represent the local visual identity, ornaments and various graphical elements of the ancient Egyptian culture were investigated and studied for the possibility of illustrating them in both a literal and abstract sense. The challenge was to have a renewed rendition of the Egyptian image that would engage the local audience who would otherwise see the use of the local language as a cliche, while still clearly communicating that identity with the international scene. Moreover, jazz music and concerts do not have a big audience in Egypt at all, and it was therefore a necessity to project an energetic, contemporary mood through the colors, forms and composition of the poster. Since its time of publishing online and in print, the wide spreading of the poster among various circles demonstrated the impact it had on fans of the festival and graphics enthusiasts alike, helping in enhancing the appeal of the festival and how jazz is locally perceived.
CHALLENGE: It is the festival's intention to emphasise both its local identity while opening up to the international jazz scene. The goal was to design an image that communicates this idea internationally, while still seeming interesting to its local audience who can easily regard the use of ancient Egyptian motifs and symbols as redundant.
