DESIGN NAME: Cheerful Spirit Creations
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bottle Centerpiece
INSPIRATION: Some of Jennifer Vodrazka's passions are holiday decorating, recycling, and handmade glass decor. A few years ago, she decided to bring all of these together. Inspired by talented upcyclers, Jennifer learned bottle lamp making, but still wanted to create something unique for gift giving. Eventually she came up with filling the bottles with decorated trees.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Jennifer takes wine bottles and miniature Christmas trees and turns them into a handmade tree-in-a-bottle decorations. The design has many unique aspects. It is the first and only Christmas tree in a bottle decoration to date. It has a patent pending wireless design using string lights. The bottle was specifically designed to keep the entire shape of the wine bottle. These magical creations can replace candles or a vase as a centerpiece.
Love parties, wine, decorating and holidays? A Cheerful Spirit Creation brings cheer and light to any room. The bottle "capture" the spirit of Christmas time.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The bottle stands beautifully on it's own and to turn on the lights, you pick up the bottle and switch the button underneath the base of the bottle.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project began in October 2016 and was completed in August 2018 in Westchester, New York. It was on display at Consumer Product Events Holiday show in New York city's Time Square in May 2018

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product is made using bottlebrush or sisal trees, wine bottles, string lights, and crushed glass. I created a patent pending string light base to make the bottle a wireless centerpiece. First, we cut a 60mm center hole under the base of the bottle. We do this to preserve the entire shape of the wine bottle. Then we attach the tree to the string light base. Once the tree is strung and decorated, we place the entire unit in the bottle. The on/off switch and 2 AAA batteries are then hidden at the base of the bottle.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 90mm x 90mm x 345mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The first research I conducted was to see what the options were to make this centerpiece I envisioned. The first model I made had a cork base with a battery pack and wire coming out of the back of the bottle. After testing many types of string lights and battery bases (corks, closures, plugs, and caps), I realized I had to create this specific base myself. The base I need did not exist. I measured many different ways to make the battery light base using vernier calipers in my garage. I also had to test several ways to cut out the hole for the light base and trees. I used a stationary drill press and diamond hole saws for this. After a year of trying different methods and sizes, I was then able to hire an engineer to create the lighted battery base.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design activity was changing the design to a wireless design. I went from using store bought string lights to having to hire an engineer to create the CAD files for the light base I envisioned. It was my first experience explaining my design and bringing it to life with this one part was somewhat difficult.
