DESIGN NAME: Tokyo Sento Project
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Social Capital
INSPIRATION: SENTO is a public bath popular in Japan for about 700 years.
It not only improves the local hygiene environment but also functions as a community place for local people.
Various people visit the public bath every day from old people to children.
There is a environment that can help each other.
People are concerned about each other's physical condition, parents can wash their bodies while other guests are talking about their small children.
The public bath has solved regional problems like the isolation of the elderly and parents.
However, in recent years, public baths are on a downward trend.
As customers and managements aged, the image that “SENTO is outdated" was established among people.
"Is SENTO we love really outdated? Is not it necessary now that SENTO is a community place for local people?" This is the question that triggered us to this project.
First of all, we launched a website named “TOKYO SENTO”, so that public bathes is recognized in the world, we started disseminating information of public bathes.
And in order for young people to gather in public bathes, we rebranded it.
By doing so, our website became a platform that young people who likes public bathes are likely to gather.
It disseminating various projects relevant by rebranding. And created a community that young people who in various occupations with a challenging mind who want to realize in society.
In the process of this activity, we also faced another social problem.
It is a problem of how young people work.
We found that Young people likes public bathes have many problems.
- They are tired of overwork.
- They can’t enjoy their job, because the existing job is no longer development.
- Their life plan is an unstable, because the concept of lifelong employment has collapsed.
- They want to connect with people because they feel insecure about the future.
However we found that they have motivation to contribute something to society, to change society itself.
We developed SENTO as a local community. In addition, by developing the public bath as a new market, we also created an environment where young people can work a new way of working.
We raise the value as a necessary place for the community as a community of public bath by the power of design. And we give people who has a motivation to contribute something to society opportunity of realize it in this society.
TOKYO SENTO can provide new public bathes and new way of working that suits this era.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Creating a community based in sustainable SENTO
1. Management of WEB site connecting people and public bathes
2. Management of public bathes as experiment site to provide it for one of the occupation
3. Connect them to companies as media that advertisement and event places
4. Make an environment in which new companies, occupations and organizations that related public bath are established
Through these activities, we have made it which was a declining industry a necessity for the present society.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Basically everyone can participate in activities of TOKYO SENTO.
We have a system that people can choose how they relate us by their motivation.
Even if you like motivation to participate, "I love SENTO" or "I want to make use of my special skill".
1. You attend a regular meeting.
2. You present about the project you are thinking or a public bath that you went recently.
3. You can find collaborators of your project or participate in other projects.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2015 in Tokyo.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In 2015, we began with a website to disseminate about public bathes.
This activity spread to various fields such as interviews with famous person, events attracting more than 100 people, tie-up plannings with companies.
People gathered as fans accelerated activities. They connected their challenge and social realization, and carried out novel projects.
As activities got excited, we gather attention from companies, and many famous persons profess they love it. It became an attraction in society.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This project will be realized that connected people with a challenging mind and social realization with the theme of SENTO.
- Creating an environment that people can challenge

- To accumulate knowledge not yet in the world and develop it to other fields by making it a method

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: "Is SENTO we love really outdated? Is not it necessary now that SENTO is a community place for local people?" All of our activities has started from this question.
Our answer to that is this. "SENTO that we consider is rather a place that fits with the times."
We redesign SENTO from a creative perspective, management perspective, and new way of working.
We are offering SENTO as a base place for the community that matched the present era.
CHALLENGE: There are three important things when we do our activities.
1. To respect for people's thoughts about SENTO
People who manage of SENTO and people who do not go to SENTO and so on, we respect everyone's thoughts.
2. To Love SENTO
We perform planning with a passion for SENTO.
3. To create future of SENTO
We create new profit system of SENTO.
