DESIGN NAME: Nexo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: On Board Unit
INSPIRATION: To create an all-in-one device we brought together all the possible on board payment methods from NFC card readers to ticket printers, to QR code reader for electronic or printed tickets, plus the driver console with a user-friendly interface. The adjustable console makes the product appropriate for various types of vehicles. Our work includes every phase from design research to engineering to bring the most enhanced experience, fit compactly for today's and future's buses.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Nexo combines the bus driver console with a complete multi purpose fare collection management device for on board payments. The driver has the ability to adjust the screen position both on X and Y axis for optimum comfort, regardless of the mounting position on every vehicle. Beyond the ergonomic consideration, the symmetrical design allows global use, whether in a country with right side driver seat or left.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This product operates either as a supervisor of all on-board equipment or as a stand-alone device. The rider can buy and print tickets, show bank cards or pass cards, show electornic or printed ticket with QR code. The driver can control the Automatic Vehicle Location and Real Time Passenger information functionalities. Driver can adjust the position on x and y axis for better ergonomics, regardless of the mounting position on every vehicle. It can be used both in left or right side driver vehicles due to symmetric design.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project started on June 2017 and on December 2017 it moved to the engineering phase. On March 2018 the first prototype was built and on July 2018 the product was in serial production. All of this took place in Istanbul, Turkey.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The material used for the case is PC-ABS shaped with plastic injection method. The internal card components were brought together with metal sheet bending methods. The whole case and component engineering was done by our agency.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Market analysis and field research were implemented in order to define user needs. It was seen that there were two main devices on the bus for the driver and the riders that were separate because different types of vehicles would need different placements. We were able to create an innovative multi functional device that combines these features. Moreover, multiple ways of on board payment methods were built in together as different riders required alternative methods of payment.
CHALLENGE: Combining two different devices in a way that would fit different types of vehicles was the main challenge. Bringing together different payment methods in a symmetrical way was again an innovation that we had to work for in especially the engineering process. Another aspect to take into consideration was the continuous vibration in the bus, effecting usage. The robust adjustable product was the result.
