| DESIGN NAME: Fin PRIMARY FUNCTION: Folding Bicycle INSPIRATION: It all begins with hobby into cycling eventually became a vintage bike collector especially folding bike. I was inspire and mesmerized with the historical value, folding invention evolution, the design process and implementation in result creating awareness and influence the society mobility landscape. This design is to create a full size bike riding experience yet comes in small package. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Fin is a folding bicycle with a concept of being fun, innovative and neat. Swofinty envisions to introduce a practical way to commute on the road, be it public or private transportation while enjoying the bike as a companion and commuting pal. The bike consists of one single frame size which uses standard available components with a range of customisation options and an integrated rear suspension. To aid in urban commute, Fin is able to swiftly fold - putting aside the worries of where to park, lock & store. When folded one can easily pick up the bike or roll at ease like – similar to a shopping cart. The design features a skewed fin-like profile main frame with pivoted hinges and coupling, a uni-crown design at the front fork & rear extremities, elastomer rear suspension for extra comfort, adjustable seat post, and a double tube handlebar stem (stem & handlebar come in various lengths and design) These options would translate the geometry of the bike differently for each rider’s preference – offering flexibility and adding a personal touch. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: How to fold the FIN folding bike? Undo the lever allowing the saddle to drop down. Tighten the lever back up. First fold – Unscrew the handlebar uni-crown lever hinge clamp. Second fold – Unscrew the mainframe coupling, grip the downtube support. Using a swing outward-in action move the front wheel backwards and hook onto rear frame. Quick release the left pedal and roller wheel. Fin bike is now folded. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: May 2016 in Shah Alam, Malaysia and finished in Sept 2018. This period of design and development with limited human resource, I have produce one mock up test frame, and 2 prototypes. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Fin was handmade using mild steel (Prototype ll) SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Fin fold to portable practical size and the dimensions when folded are 595mm high x 645mm depth x 295mm width and wheelbase is 1000mm. Main frame construction were steel material is resilient and comfortable. Wheel tyre size: ETRTO 37-349mm (16”) fitted with Sturmey Archer X-RF 8 speed internal hub pair with 20t sprocket with grip shifter for climb, speed and urban ride. With the understanding I have design this new method of folding without compromising commuter necessity and the ride similar to a full size bike. CHALLENGE: Fin challenge is the process in designing, to begin with a compact folded package eventually unfold transform into a full size bike yet complete with all convenient and benefits in place. This strategy enable me to understand the constraint, rethink user requirement, compactness, mechanism choices, standard part integration, and usability. NAME: Fin PROFILE: Swofinty founded the practice in 2008 and continue to retain responsibility for its design directions. Swofinty has worked across the ASIA. He learnt the art of design and management while working with some of the best-known designers, including Richard Farnell in SG/KL and John Ding in KL. Working at these companies continued to provide him with a worldwide perspective on design at greater level while cultivating and abreast the nuances and complexities in design. Swofinty trained at the University of Curtin and was awarded the scholarship in Interior Architecture. He was a tutor at the University of LimKokWing LUCT and has held visiting panel at the University of Taylors, the University of USCI and the University of LimKokWing LUCT. Since inception, Swofinty and the studio have amassed accolades in the way of press, publications, awards, and conferences. To champion and to explore design to its limit, interior architecture as well as learned first and exactly the process of making impossible possible. Engaging with the essence of a philosophy of space through everything the senses is a defining aspect of Swofinty’s work. ‘it’s all design’. |
