DESIGN NAME: Herringbone
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Writing Desk
INSPIRATION: The design of the writing desk was inspired by Baltic folk motifs. The herringbone pattern encircles the desk alluding to the woven sash, that is intrinsic to the Baltic folk costume. The idea is that a traditional pattern can be reborn into a modern design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The desk is surrounded by decorative detail made from wood which gives additional authenticity while furniture could be placed anywhere in the room. The front of desk has a hidden drawer. The top of table is equipped with additional space for goods placement. The handles-openings on the top are serving as cable channels if user prefers to keep top closed and neat. Writing desk created for people wanting to harmonize their creative clutter and make it cozy yet organized.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a multi-functional writing desk with a drawer and an additional space beneath the table top for storing notebook or writing supplies. Combined with the soft edges and the textile like pattern this design creates a comfortable space not only for work, but also for having some time for yourself.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2017 and was exhibited at Design week in Vilnius in May 2017 and Furniture design exhibition (Vilnius) in October 20

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Table top and bottom are made from painted MDF. The pattern is cut by CNC on natural oak board. The drawer slides have push-to-open mechanism allowing for a sleek handle-less look. Table legs are natural oak with powder coated steel mounting plates.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Nowadays design is becoming more and more modern and getting a big variety of forms. Behind this we all have a history of visual arts and design which got that kind of shape year by year as it is today. As old songs reborn, folk art have a possibility to be stylized and integrated into nowadays design.
CHALLENGE: To create a simple yet functional writing desk with discreet storage places that wouldn't obstruct the harmonious flow of the decorative pattern.
