DESIGN NAME: Neolith Retrostone
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Surfacing Material
INSPIRATION: Terrazzo has been re-emerging lately as a favourite in the design world. Traditionally a method of reusing stone offcuts, it is not limited by colour or grain size restrictions, allowing flexibility to develop a distinct character. Responding to recent demand for the vintage motif, Neolith defined Retrostone with subdued tones and a larger grain for contemporary use and a longevity which will transcend fluctuating interior trends.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Retrostone is an aesthetically pleasing original surface based on design classic terrazzo. Its motif is a playful twist on traditionally bold, and sometimes gaudy, terrazzo. Incorporating softer, translucent tones and a larger grain, this subtle surface gives the classic a new lease of life. Made using Neolith's Full Body Technology, the same colour and design as the surface is integrated throughout the slab, offering fabricators incredible creative potential.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: While terrazzo has mainly been confined to flooring, Retrostone has improved performance qualities and is suitable for worktops, walls and exterior cladding. Resistant to extreme temperatures and wear, it can be used in the kitchen directly for chopping and setting down hot crockery. Non porous, it's ideal for humid environs. Used outside, it won't be affected by UV exposure. Large dimensions and Neolith's special rectifying system make installation easy and reduce the number of joints needed.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea for Retrostone started in March 2017. After visiting international trade shows in April and seeing the prevalence of terrazzo, Neolith started to develop its own distinct interpretation. A prototype was produced in August 2017 before being exhibited in Verona at Marmomac in September 2017. After proving popular at the fair, Retrostone became a permanent addition to Neolith's 2018 collection.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A new development for Sintered Stone, Retrostone's full body effect was created through the combination of Neolith Digital Design (NDD) and emergent Full Body Technology. NDD has revolutionised design possibilities, achieving a new level of realism for surfaces like Retrostone. Full Body Technology integrates the same colour and design as the surface throughout the slab. For Retrostone, Neolith incorporated a polished effect to the grain, adding visual value to the pattern.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As with all Neolith products, Retrostone was created through the company's proprietary sinterzation technology, which involves exposing minerals and other raw materials to extremely high pressure and temperature (over 1200 degrees Celsius/2200 degrees Fahrenheit), resembling the way natural stone forms over thousands of years, in just hours. The process gives the product outstanding physical and mechanical properties in terms of compaction, resistance and durability.
CHALLENGE: The challenge in developing Retrostone was overcoming the ubiquity of terrazzo and the fleeting nature of so many design trends. Often overused for public surfaces, terrazzo can err on the side of banal. To overcome this, Neolith chose a distinctively large grain in neutral tones, which can serve as a long lasting, eye-catching backdrop for the ephemeral popularity of bolder colours. A subtle shine in its grain makes this rendition of a design classic stand out for its high quality.
