DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
One Year Project

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Villa

INSPIRATION:
It usually functioning in accordance with defined regulations in modern society, we ponder that construction of the “One year project” should yield to nature. This is an idea of “borrow” not “receive” the resources from natural environment. After the project completion, we have to return-as-we-used to plant the same kind of trees to prepare the necessary amount of natural material for next generations.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
“One year project” as the name indicates “move with times” which means that it took entire one year to experience the whole process such as tree cutting, sawing, fabrication, and assembling together with nature. At its heart, a house building is expected to be succeeding each process through dialogue with nature. Steel posts are standing from the local Inawashiro made volcanic rocks (granite) used for isolated footings which protect it from 2m-high snow load in winter.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This is a villa located at Inawashiro,Fukushima,Japan with heavy snow load in winter. The owner comes here on the weekends and vacations to relax and escape form busy daily life. The elevated structure system makes it possible to enjoy the natural environment not just in summer but all the time. When it's sunny, people can have a BBQ party on the ground besides the building. As it turns to be rainy, the space under the building surrounded by stones is also a good playground for kids. Even in a snowy day, family get together around the stove in the living room to enjoy the pure view outside. "Enjoy"not just means seeing and touching, the bridge connects two blocks of the buildings is a place to talk to nature directly by five feeling with really marvelous experience in the narrative spaces of indoor, outdor, indoor.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project is designed in 2015 in Inawashiro, Fukushima, constructed from November 2015 and finished in December 2016.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
We used the bedrock congealed lave in the ancient times as substrate that lying under 80cm below and installed 1.5m rectangular-like natural volcanic block(granite) as isolated footings which were selected one by one with masons and thoroughly investigated to install. The forest of steel posts are come up alternately from footings. These posts are connected to the wooden lattice-work stilt floor surface at the middle and to the square roof surface at the top. By supporting vertical and horizontal force by the posts, this structural system made it possible to have open vision.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
As the name implies, the "One year project" is centered on the idea of moving with the time. Compared to the general construction period of residential project that is about four months, we spent an year to take part in the construction of structure-from cutting to the sawing, the processing, the delivery, the assembling, and the landscaping-gave birth to many wonderful stories. To maintain the original features of the trees and stones, we spent a lot of time to select them one by one and communicate with craftsman about the non-standardized sizes and the methods of fabricating and assembling.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part of this project is the foundation and structure. Using local "Bandai stone" for the isolated foundations is really a big challenge for us because each stone vary in size and shape. We chose them one by one to make sure they are proper for the foundation. To imitate the trees in the forest, posts coming up from the stones with different angles which means it's necessary to adjust the level of the foundation stones precisely to make it perfect to connect the posts.

PROFILE:
We are always impressed and fulfilled by the four beautiful seasons of Mt Adatara. Having grown up here, surrounded by Mt Adatara, we have learned the wisdom of living. This important wisdom, which has been passed through the generations, has both eternal and universal value. We believe that we design with this wisdom, not only here but worldwide. To do so, we firstly examine both the climate and nature of a specific area with care. After that, we propose ideas that locals will love and support. As we look towards the future, we keep challenging our selves. How many ideas we can realize that will be breath-taking and exciting? How many projects can we design worldwide that will benefit our home town of Adarata? We would like to show ‘ the lifestyle’ of each locale through our unique ideas and designs, which emerge when we are thinking and creating while taking in the view of Mt A darata from our office.
