DESIGN NAME: Tern
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Air Purifier
INSPIRATION: I have found that users often encounter a series of inconveniences when using air purifiers, such as waste of space and overuse of air purifiers. Therefore, we want to propose a new solution that changes from the user's usage patterns to optimize the user experience and save space and power.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Tern Air Purifier is designed for users living in small apartment. Tern Air Purifier consists of three main structures: two air purifiers—— one big and one small—— and a display screen similar to a wall clock. The display is usually hung on the wall of the bedroom, allowing users to more intuitively and clearly understand the real-time air quality data of bedroom.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Tern Air Purifier is a modular design and its core idea is an air quality detector similar to a wall clock. It allows users to more intuitively and easily understand the air quality in the room, thus guiding and reminding users to respond. When the user notices that the air quality is degraded, the user can take out the smaller air purifier and place it in the room needed to be purified.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2017 in Wuhan and finished in March 2018 in Wuhan, and won the Red Dot award in 2018's Red Dot Award: Design Concept.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Through a series of investigations, I found that people often encounter inconveniences and problems when people use air purifiers in a relatively small apartment, such as excessive use of air purifiers and waste of interior space. I began to consider how to guide and Change the user's usage habits through product design to achieve user convenience, space saving and energy saving. So I proposed this design to solve these problems from a unique perspective.
CHALLENGE: We have found that users often encounter a series of inconveniences when using air purifiers, such as waste of space and overuse of air purifiers. Therefore, we want to propose a new solution that changes from the user's usage patterns to optimize the user experience and save space and power.
