DESIGN NAME: Luminare
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lamp
INSPIRATION: The forms created in this collection are the result of an extensive research in the Industrial Design field, covering historical interpretations and market offerings. The design is a re-interpretation of traditional and recognizable lamps using geometrical compositions.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: What makes a lamp, a lamp? And How simple can it be? The design is composed by four basic elements intertwine to form a minimalistic and geometric expression of a traditional ceiling lamp. The designer's idea was to reflect about all stages of design using Dieter Rams ten design principles as reference, and utilizing a simple object to convey a design philosophy that goes beyond aesthetics.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Assembly the two wood frames together and roll the cable on the top to secure the structure. Connect the cable to the grid and place a lightbulb in the light socket.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2018 in Manhattan, Kansas, USA.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Lighting Products and Fixtures Design
|
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The frame is made out of different types of Plywood. The only process of manufacturing is by CNC cutting the plywood, sanding and protecting with varnish/oil. The electric cable used is standard.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions varies between lamps. Overall 250mm x 250mm x 350mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The autor researched about the history of luminaires with a focus on the most iconical products and how people identify them, in the pursue of learning which basic shapes are easier to recognize. He developed several drawings and prototypes, and exposed those to colleagues and people not related with the design world, to analyze the effectiveness of his first design iterations. Everyone who saw any of the final lamp designs (even without a lightbulb) agreed to recognize the shape of a lamp.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part was to address all the requirements and ideas in a very simple way keeping in mind the lifecycle of the products while following the 10 Dieter Rams principles as a guideline. The other big challenge for him was to design the lamps using a CNC router as the only manufacturing process.

I am so incredibly impressed by Hernan Gregorio's work, Luminare. This award-winning lamp is a stunning example of how industrial design can be used to create a minimalistic, geometric expression of a traditional ceiling lamp. The fact that Hernan was able to research the history of luminaires, develop several drawings and prototypes, and create a recognizable lamp design speaks volumes to their creative talent and dedication to the craft. It's clear that Hernan put a lot of thought and care into the design process, and it is highly rewarding to see that their hard work was recognized with an A' Design Award. I can only imagine how much pride and joy Hernan must be feeling in this moment - congratulations!
