DESIGN NAME: Infusion Guard
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Intelligent Infusion Controller
INSPIRATION: In China, because of the overpopulation of patients, nurses in the emergency room have to work extra hours. A large number of the patients take infusion treatment as emergency measures. Even though nurses are working hard to take care of all the patients, risks still exist if patients change the infusion speed themselves or needles are not pulled out in time before drug runoff. Therefore, an intelligent infusion controller that can help nurses make the infusion treatment safer is necessary.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Infusion Guard is an intelligent product used in the emergency room in China. This medical device is designed to reduce medical workers’ workload and at same times, ensures the safety of infusion. It can automatically adjust the infusion speed and temperature to the required amount after nurses start the infusion. When medicine is about the runoff, this infusion guard will send notice to nurse. With the help of infusion guard, the right time of pulling out the needle won’t be missed.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Nurses will use the smartwatch to set required infusion speed and heating information for the patients and send it to the corresponding infusion guard. The button of " start" will light up after successfully receiving the demand. Press "start ", the device will automatically adjust infusion speed and heating up the medicine. When the treatment is about to finished. The device will send notice to nurses, patients can also press "Help" to call the nurse or whenever they need help.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2017 and finished in July 2017 in Beijing.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To realize the function, inside the device should integrate various of modules: the central processing chip, for controlling all the other modules; the Wi-Fi module, for receiving and sending message to the watch; the mini-motor, for adjusting infusion rate by rolling the wobbler; the heating wire, for heating up the medicine; and also a rechargeable battery that can maintain working for more than 12 hours.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: China is facing serious over population of patients, especially in the emergency room. In order to make infusion treatment more safe to the patients,we designed this infusion guard. In the research phase, we visited two nurses who works in emergency room, and interviewed more than twenty patients. The result indicate that patients always change the infusion rate to shorten the treatment time. And they have no idea when they should ask nurse to pull out the needle. The research is also including the prototype test to confirm the final shape of the product.
CHALLENGE: There are two hard parts in the design activity. One is the realization of the flow controller. The other is how to design the multiple information in one small screen.
