DESIGN NAME: Ning Collection
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chairs Collection
INSPIRATION: Ning, inspired by the Ming-style rounded-back armchair, is given its name because of the multiple meanings attached to the word - in Mandarin, Ning as a noun is an ancient family surname; as a verb, it means the act of wishing and hoping; in the form of an adjective, it expresses a state of peacefulness and tranquility. In addition, Ning is also inspired by curves of the female body - The silhouette features straight back and round arm, which is intermediary to the curves of the human body and the seat.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Ning collection is a re-interpretation of eastern classical aesthetic heritage. Aiming to infuse ancient culture and recreate the classic atmosphere in modern life, the collection considers multiple scenarios and functionality in different types of settings. Hence the six variants.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The multiple solutions in terms of module design in the Ning collection is achieved by integrating design principles. Praxis-ÂIntegrating design solution: The integration of ideas into module parts. The usability of Ning collection serves multiple purposes and adapts in different environments by changing components.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Jun 2016 and finished in Sep 2017 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Using the CNC machine to carve the ABS(Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) to make components. Then, assemble each part together and complete the final finishing.
The frames are made of standard metric steel tubes with the powder-coated finish.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Ming-style round-backed armchair is a particular object with the regional style of Chinese and it has been interpreted by pluralistic designers in the world. As a mandarin designer who is seeking the spatial identity of culture, this phenomenon becomes the motivation to start this project.
The research processed in three phases which include history review, spatial, hermeneutic. In the end, the research is summed up in the result of 6 different typologies chairs.
CHALLENGE: Ming-style round-backed armchair has been interpreted several times. Finding the new solution to conserve the aesthetic object is a task of the creativity, research. To achieve the usability for multiple usages.
The design challenge is that design an innovated joint, for 6 types of chairs of the collection.
