DESIGN NAME: Stacked Coffee Table
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the Stacked coffee table came during a game of cards. As the dealer placed the deck on the table the top few cards moved fractionally, resulting in a slightly disorderly stack. This idea of 'casual disorder' was the concept behind the project, and one of the main factors that informed the final aesthetic of the table.
Another inspiration for the project was our love of wood. We wanted to celebrate the variety of species available, and showcase their individual beauty, grain structures, colours and textures.
Finally, we wanted to design a flat-pack table that is beautiful and unique in its aesthetic, simple and quick to assemble, and low-cost to store and ship.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Stacked is constructed from 3 layers of mismatching veneered plywood panels, to create a novel and playful aesthetic that is unlike anything else on the market.
The table is available in 6 standard colour options, but it’s modular design means parts are interchangeable, so we can fulfil custom orders quickly and easily. In fact, by pre-cutting and storing multiples of each component we can call off parts as and when required, meaning we can reduce costs, lead times, waste and stock holding.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Stacked coffee table is designed to be quick and easy to assemble. The 3 table-top layers are designed with holes and corresponding locating studs which slot into each to accurately locate each part. Only 14 screws are needed to fix the table-tops and legs together, and the whole assembly process can be completed in under 4 minutes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The tables were designed in London and are manufactured in Yorkshire, UK.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In the first stage of production the table-tops and legs are cut on a CNC router. (By design, the size and shape of the table-tops mean we can yield 5 pieces from each 8ft x 4ft sheet, reducing waste to a minimum). Next, parts are finished by hand and placed into storage until a sale is made. When this happens, the necessary parts are picked and quickly assembled using just 14 screws, in under 4 minutes.
Wood options: American Maple, European Oak, American Black Walnut. All are FSC-certified.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Table Dimensions: Width 1150mm x Depth 600mm x Height 360mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After the concept of 'a pile of cards' was confirmed we conducted research into materials to determine suitable options given our requirements for a strong, rigid, hard-wearing sheet material that was suitably thin (to reference the thinnest of paper). Thereafter, we went through several prototype iterations to refine the aesthetics of the table, and optimise the modular design. Finally, we looked at the manufacturing process to identify process constraints and possible efficiency gains.
CHALLENGE: The greatest challenge during the project was balancing the aesthetics of the displaced table-top layers with the modular design we were trying to achieve. In certain sections of the table we had to ensure there was sufficient material thickness (to allow strong fixings and anchors), without compromising on the modularity, strength, rigidity, ease of assembly and waste reduction of the design.
