DESIGN NAME: Terrace Coffee Table
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: The Terrace coffee table draws inspiration from terrace farming practices employed in mountainous regions of the Far East and South America. In much the same way that the hillsides are terraformed to produce flat, cultivatable land the terraces meandering across the table surface are carved out of the wood to form 2 large, flat plains which provide practical areas for work or storage.
Another motivation for the project was to steer a paradigm shift in the way people perceive and interact with furniture. To this end, the use of terraces and layers breaks away from the traditional linear aesthetic of standard furniture, and introduces height and depth (in the form of platforms) as a means to escape the monotony of flat surfaces. Not only does this add character to the design, but it forces the user to rethink how each piece is to be used by offering a functionality that is unconventional yet familiar.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Terrace was born from a desire to create a coffee table that is functional art; that is new and interesting in both form and function. Aesthetically, the table’s sculptural form introduces a new design language and topology that is eye-catching and original. Functionally, however, the use of terracing creates layers and platforms of differing heights that break away from the flat, linear form-factor of standard furniture, offering a user experience that is novel and unconventional, yet familiar.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The true beauty of the Terrace coffee table can only be experienced in its presence. Apart from their sculptural splendour, as you move around and interact with the table the play of light and shadow, as they advance and retreat along the winding contours, accentuates the beauty of the carvings and imparts a dynamism rarely seen in furniture. In addition, the sweeping terraces offer a lovely tactile quality, making the experience of running your fingers along them extremely satisfying.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The table was designed in London and is manufactured in Yorkshire, UK.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To make a Terrace coffee table planks of wood are first joined together to form a single block. This is then placed in a CNC router and the terraces and edge perimeter are carved from the wood. Next, the leg brackets and braces (to stop the table-top warping) are cut on the router, and the legs are turned on a lathe. Finally, all parts are finished and assembled.
Wood Options: Sapele, American Maple, European Oak or American Black Walnut. (All woods, except Sapele, are FSC certified).
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Table Dimensions: Width 1280mm x Depth 920mm x Height 370mm
Package Dimensions: Width 1400mm x Depth 1050mm x Height 200mm
TAGS: table, furniture, terrace, coffee table, occasional table, storage, living room, contours, wood, CNC
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Early research conducted in this project included studying terrace farming practices around the world, and the use of contours in architectural scale models. We then went through the ideation and concept development stages, followed by research into materials and processes given the final product specifications. Finally, we went through several prototype iterations to understand the strength and warping issuing of the material, and to identify process constraints and possible efficiency gains.
CHALLENGE: The greatest challenge during the project was balancing the aesthetics of the terraces (and subsequent material thickness variations) with the resulting warping issues. We had to play around with the shape and size of the terracing, and we had to test the minimum and maximum table thicknesses that would offer a manageable amount of warping.

This unique piece of furniture is a work of functional art that perfectly combines style and practicality. The sculptural form of the table introduces a new topology that is eye-catching and original, while the terracing across the table surface creates layers and platforms of differing heights that break away from the traditional linear form-factor of standard furniture. It is clear that much research and thought has gone into the design of this piece, from the terrace farming practices employed in mountainous regions of the Far East and South America, to the careful selection of materials, to the intricate carving of the terraces and edge perimeter, to the turning of the legs on a lathe.
