DESIGN NAME: Vira Garden Collection
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Outdoor Lights
INSPIRATION: The design inspiration was based on idea of the lamp being a heavy and strong sculpture in the garden, a shape that resembles a rock, and also emits light. The light coming out of a hole in this concrete and geometric shape, explores the idea of one unusual situation, a hole in a mass shape that emits light. Also the solution comes as a paradigm change in the way that most outdoor lamps are made and installed in the garden, usually they are made to be hidden and also of light materials (metal)
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Vira garden light Collection was conceived as an expressive object that, due to its technical and aesthetic qualities, can be exposed in the space of the garden, appearing between the architectural elements and the vegetation in the environment. In addition to the aesthetic features these concrete luminaires feature an innovative concrete seal solution that has successfully tested the IP66, IP67 and resistance tests to saline fog.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Vira's light concrete collection was conceived as a set of expressive objects that, due to their technical and aesthetic qualities, can be exhibited in the garden space, appearing between the architectural elements and the vegetation in the composition of the environments.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2017 in São Paulo, Brazil, and ended in September 2018 in the same city. It was exhibited at the Museu da Casa Brasileira at the 32nd Design Prize of 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: During the study of the form the production of pieces in concrete began and, throughout this process of prototyping, the crucial constructive questions were being formulated, arriving at the final design, as well as the definitive production process. The bottom sealing system and the fixation of the glass directly on the concrete were the two most complex inventive solutions that required enormous complexity in the form and the production process of the piece conferring innovation to the set and that enabled the creation of the inn ovative concrete garden light projector.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The creative process began with free modeling in clay, a material whose plasticity allowed experimentation in volumetric possibilities and to glimpse the path to be followed. The work with clay gave the idea that would guide the development process of this project: the image of a sculptural piece solid as a rock projecting light from a small opening. After this initial study an extensive process of concrete research began on how to develop a special form to solve the sealing system. This was eventually solved with the development of several prototypes.
CHALLENGE: Because it is a lamp that uses its own technique of execution and production, the whole process was complex and it went through several difficulties as the creation of the form for the concrete, the development of the substance of the concrete that conferred high quality and the most iimportant one of them the sealing system in the concrete that made possible the creation of a garden projector in concrete, an innovation in this family of lamps.
