DESIGN NAME: Concentric Watch
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wristwatch
INSPIRATION: Inspired of minimal art by Max Bill, Bridget Riley, Frank Stella and others.
Every dial's "Color Code' stands for a personal ideal, a dream or vision of the person who owns it - when looking at it, he or she's remembered of the reason what they are living for. The slogan for marketing the product could be "Follow your Vision!".
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Maximum individuality - every Concentric Watch is different. The owner wears his individual piece of minimal art on his wrist.
There will be less normed, massproduced items. New technics will make it possible, that one can buy clothes, mugs, carpets, curtains, plates, bowls etc. which only exist once.
Schulthess's Concentric watches are forerunners of such new singular products, handmade with the help of computer- and modern printing tech. So far, unique watches of this kind are not seen on the market, because the pad printing of so many colors would be way too expensive for just one watch.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It works like a normal, analog automatic watch. ETA 2824 calibre.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 2014 until now. Basel, Switzerland

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The designer makes the dial graphics with his own, especially programmed software, the 'Random Art Generator'. Each design is chosen out of hundreds of different random results. Like this, the designer receives a color concept in which he further focuses in, by editing it.
The final works are printed on Ektachrome Metallic paper and later punched out. The watchmaker is then setting them professionally into the steel case with the Swiss automatic movement and a sapphire crystal. High quality colored Watchbands in rubber or leather are mounted.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 41mm Stainless Steel Case

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: No research, just testing the market in shops, online, in exhibitions.
CHALLENGE: We worked with different print studios and watchmaker companies - but nobody was able to make dial prints in this high resolution and as unique pieces. In the end we decided to produce the dials on our own, with professional foto prints.
