DESIGN NAME: WithDelight
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Cup and Saucer
INSPIRATION: I grew up in Turkey where it is a custom to serve a cup of coffee with a sweet treat, such as a Turkish delight. In the following years, I also realized that enjoying coffee with accompanying treats is part of many different cultures; for example, it is common to serve coffee with biscotti in Italy, with churros in Spain and with dates in Arabia. One common problem I noticed was that the cups and saucers were not designed to hold the treats properly and this was taking away from the enjoyment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Small, bite-sized treats are great for serving on the side of coffee; however, on conventional saucers these treats tend to slide towards the hot coffee cup and stick to it or get wet if the coffee spills. This is because of the inward slope of saucers which causes the treats to lean on the cup and move to the center of saucer when the cup is held up. To prevent this, this coffee cup has a saucer with dedicated slots keeping the treats in place.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There are four slots on the saucer to keeps the coffee treats stable: a rectangular slit (e.g. for thin chocolate), a cubic groove (e.g. for Turkish delight), a spherical groove (e.g. for chocolate covered berries), a cylindrical groove (e.g. for truffles and bonbons). Also, the shape of the cup allows to be flipped upside-down on the saucer. This is especially useful for Turkish coffee as it is a custom to flip the cup upside-down & read fortune by examining the patterns of coffee grounds.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2017 in Amsterdam, NL and finished in January 2018 Providence, RI, USA.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: An observational research was conducted by examining the interaction of the consumer with the coffee cup and treats. Results of this preliminary study showed that the quality of coffee drinking experience could be improved by developing a coffee cup allowing stable containment of treats, which is missing in the market. Being one of the most quintessential hot beverages, coffee has an impact in user daily behavior and an advancement in this regard could positively and significantly affect life.
CHALLENGE: A demitasse (a category of small coffee cup) has certain size and volume capacity criteria. Designing the optimal depth of grooves on the saucer according to these dimensions constrains was challenging. Furthermore, the bottom wall thickness of grooves become weak and fragile by increasing the depth of the grooves. Also, the coffee treats cannot be supported sufficiently by decreasing the depth. A set of models were made to ensure that the product has the aimed strength and practicality.
