DESIGN NAME: Memory of Water
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Glass Ring
INSPIRATION: Inspired by water's natural form and its appearance under stroboscopic effect, as well as glass's delicate, feminine characteristics.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Memory of water is a unique material exploration in the form of jewellery that explores "preciousness" and "intricacy" without the use of conventional precious metal and gems. Its fluid, one of a kind form provides a new possibility for the field as an elegant wearable piece of artworks.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a ring to be worn / to be displayed as a gallery piece.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This projected began in 2015, as an interdisciplinary student project at Rhode Island School of Design.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Glass canes pulled from molten borosilicate glass, then formed around a heated mandrel. Cold work / lamp work post-processing of sharp edges / extra material. The works were later put in a separate annealer, bought up to temperature and gradually cooled to ensure the stability of the glass.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each ring is less than 1" x 1" x 1".

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I started this project with the interest in working with the concept of "re-thinking" the context of a design. I was also interested in the most innate quality of materials and how many of them were lost through modern day manufacturing. Memory of water is a unique material exploration in the form of jewellery that explores "preciousness" and "intricacy" without the use of conventional precious metal and gems. Its natural fluid quality and one of a kind form provide a new possibility for the field as an elegant wearable piece of artworks.
CHALLENGE: Coming from an industrial design and fine art background, I had no experience working with glass or jewellery prior to this project, especially in terms of small-scale manufacturing of such delicate object. I took a winter-session class at RISD that focuses on the light, shadow and transparency aspect of glass and decided to explore the possibility of turning the material into jewellery. The challenge of this project is mostly just familiarizing myself with the material, the technique, as well as how everything interacts with the body. I explored many different ways of realizing the design until I was finally able to figure it out.
