DESIGN NAME: Linear Locksets
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ergonomic Door Handles
INSPIRATION: Inspired by ergonomic designs beneficial for persons with disability or mobility impairments to access residential, commerical and public buildings.
There exists a gap in the market for affordable door furniture as most the handles on the market are the same lever and knob types which are over priced and difficult to operate for persons with arthritis or disabilities.
Futurist ergonomics and modern high end architectural design in residential and commercial decor was a major inspiration.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Linear locksets are a novel and modern high end door furniture which can simply unlock a door by pushing or pulling a handle. Simple, ergonomic and intuitive way to operate a secured door in residential, commercial and public buildings.
The push and pull mechanism is patented and eliminates the turning or pivoting action of conventional door levers and knobs, and is more simple than similar push pull handles like paddle types.
Linear locksets can be retrofitted into existing doors with no further boring required. A simple installation procedure will allow any layperson to easily replace their old door locks and handle.
An integrated easy operable privacy lock keeps doors secured and is suitable for bathrooms and bedrooms.
Furthermore, handle designs can be interchanged on existing units to simply update to future styles and trends without replacing the whole unit.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As a result, the operation to open a pivot door is now over 90 % more efficient, the product also has less than half the parts compared to conventional handles or similar paddle type handles in commercial use. The basic range is uses only 60%of materials and assembly compared to conventional handles. Furthermore, the latch retraction can be controlled to minimise the noise of closing or opening doors compared to similar paddle type doors.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Adelaide South Australia in 2015, after 12 months of research and development the perfect model was created.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Production involving customised investment casting moulds and CNC finishing and tolerance rectification.
Product contact surfaces are powder coated in various colours over stainless steel 304, which allows for high grade rust resistance and high traffic durability.
Early designs of prototypes were created by 3D printing in plastic and metal, which allowed prototyping to be realised within a few days without high costs and high labour.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Standard sizes to fit into standard 35mm and 45mm door thicknesses and standard US, AUS, UK door bores.
TAGS: Ergonomic, minimalistic, efficient, intuitive, economic, modern, value, quality.
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Market research conducted showed that there were only a couple of other similar handles on the market, which were similar in design and form to conventional handles. Nothing similar exists aesthetically to linear locksets. Furthermore, nothing exists in simplicity to linear locksets.
CHALLENGE: As part of the design process the product needed to be retrofittable into standard doors with standard holes and bores. It also needed to be simple to install in 5 or less steps. A privacy lock also needed to be integrated for residential privacy use in bathrooms and bedrooms, etc.
The internal mechanism design needed to simply acheive its objective to operate or close a door using half of the parts and materials of conventional handles and locks to conserve reources, materials, and to be environmentally more sustainable.
The door handles needed to be easily changeable for future trends.
These innovative features and challenges were all achieved in the patented design.
