DESIGN NAME: Donatello Series 2
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Automatic Tissue Processor
INSPIRATION: The increasing incidence of cancer, has been the major driver of the tissue processing and diagnostics market. The first step to diagnose a patient with cancer is the the removal of a small amount of tissue; the study of the removed specimen is crucial for the correct diagnosis and therefore it has a high impact in the survival rates. To provide an accurate and complete diagnosis, the sample in question must be stored in an optimal manner. Correct processing into the specific instrument, preserves the form, structure and molecular character of the human samples, which is very important for diagnostic purposes. Diapath, Italian Company, invested many years to design the Donatello Series 2 to guarantee reliability, safety diagnosis for the patients and best quality results for the pathology and oncology therapies. To achieve this level of innovation Diapath has invested around 1 million euro. Tissue processing into the Donatello Seris 2, is the process of sampling tissues and treating them with chemicals so that they do not undergo continuous degradation. After this treatment, other chemicals are used in order to make the tissue firm enough to be cut into micrometric sections. A subsequent staining and mounting onto a slide allows operators to highlight the structural patterns of the tissue for diagnosis. Donatello Seris 2 is easy to use, safe and efficient tissue processor to strengthen Diapath presence and competitiveness on the market. This project solves some of the needs and challenges of end users, placing Diapath firmly ahead of other brands.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The experienced benefits tested, in terms of processing quality, are enhanced by the addition of various technical features, as the SelfCheck Technology, that dramatically reduce the incidence of adverse events and overnight tissue processor errors and the reagent replacement system, that allows easily and safely replace reagent and paraffin, avoiding mistakes and spillages.
Another best feature is E.V.A (Emergengy eVoluted Alghorithm) an advanced virtual algorithm based on the optimization of the possible solutions present in the hardware of the instrument, exploiting every single possibility to complete the assigned program, able independently decide which alternative is the best for the samples and for the unit itself, and also able to communicate with the users in more different languages. All these technological features makes Donatello Series 2 a real new innovative and safe generation of intrument.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Anatomic pathology relates to the processing, examination, and diagnosis of surgical specimens by a physician trained in pathological diagnosis. The users of Pathology Laboratories put into the Donatello Series 2 human samples (biopsy, surgical specimens) and the machine carry out the entire processing protocol automatically, from formalin fixation to paraffin permeation. After this process the user removes the samples from the machine in order to obtain sections observable under a microscope to make a diagnosis and to perform molecular tests.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2012 at Diapath Headquarter, Martinengo (Italy) and the Donatello Series 2 was launched in June 2017. The first time the machine was exhibited in Medica at Year World Forum for Medicine, in Düsseldorf, Germany in november 2017. Actually, Donatello Series 2 is present in different countries of the world as the most tecnologically advanced machine

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The entire tool is designed using the SolidEdge 3D modeling software. All the metal components of the instrument are made of AISI 304 stainless steel. The plastic materials used are compatible and resistant to the temperatures and reagents used in the fabric treatment process.
The project is designed by multidisciplinary activity regarding the organisation, co-ordination and the homogeneous merging of a lot of formal, technological and industrial contributions. Beta Engineering supported Diapath Innovation Department to design the best use of technology and a coherent and concrete designing process. The design phase started from a brief which defined the technical, functional and aesthetic aspects of the product for a better visualisation.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: DIAPATH under the DONATELLO Series 2 brand of medical diagnostics devices is well established in the world market and with a very efficient distribution channel across continents. The Donatello Series 2 innovation will be an improved proposal that solves the current challenges of tissue processing. To consolidate product’s technical advantages for effective market penetration and maximise our market entry, Diapath will sign partnership agreements with distributors, companies in the Laboratory Diagnostics field and hospitals, which have a strong market presence, in order to reach the widest number of customers. Diapath is fully represented world-wide through its network of distributors throughout Europe, Middle East, Africa (principally North Africa), Asia, United States and South America. Diapath currently has partnerships in more than 50 countries around the world. The customer base requires constant innovation in addressing their needs and challenges in the medical diagnostics field.
CHALLENGE: A proper processing of human samples confers quality to the tissue and preserves morphological and molecular information which is very important for diagnostic purposes. Losing information during processing prevents a correct diagnosis, so the possibility of associating the correct oncologic target therapy, even leading to therapeutic failures. The reasearch challenge is to create and design an innovative and smart istrument for pathology labs to manage the risk and guarantee reliability, safety and best quality results.
