| DESIGN NAME: Apartment K PRIMARY FUNCTION: Home Party Office INSPIRATION: Concept was inspired by the unique character of vacation house at the mountain of Northern Europe. The timber material is applied entirely in the interior from ceiling to wall to floor. With different widths and varies lengths of the planks, the randomness imitates the natural texture of woods. This single material interior blurs the edges of different surfaces of the space yet bringing a extraordinary character. The strips pattern on floor and ceiling mirrors to each other. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: From the hint of more than a residential apartment, the concept is creating a different space and place in the city. Inspired by the vacation house at the mountain of Northern Europe, the signature full timber interior is used as the extraordinary character. This texture is applied entirely on all surfaces from ceilings to walls to floors, which blurs the edges and boundaries to enhance the flexibility of different functions and usage of different zones. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: By working closely with a contractor who has teamed up with me for years, in which they knew the quality level requirement well, the construction was carried out smoothly. They have been briefed in very detail and clearly regarding all construction details, especially the coordination of the specifically designed timber plank patterns and the setting outs. Also, frequent site checking and discussion facilitated the smooth-ness of the progress. As a result, which the construction period took a bit longer than scheduled, the project has been completed as expected. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design is simple yet sophisticated. Natural oak timber planks in varies widths and lengths were installed entirely on the ceilings walls and floors. The workmanship requirement is mostly on the coordination of the module, especially the floor and ceiling patterns are mirrored. However, simple nailing of the planks with plywood backing is the only methodology which has the sustainability concern as well, no chemical adhesive application. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The apartment is a 120 metre square property. TAGS: Full timber house, contemporary design, luxury apartment, home office, party house, timber apartment RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The major research that has been done is the preference of the client who gave this open brief, which this is one of the most difficult part. Throughout a lot of talks and chats, better ideas of what direction the client wants was found. CHALLENGE: The challenge is the client wants the design to be unexpected, therefore the concept and inspiration was to get away from the crowded metropolitan. The atmosphere and environment of the vacation house at the mountain of Northern Europe were the essential elements. During the realization, the natural behavior of the timber plank is concerned. Humidity difference between seasons might cause unstable movement. Therefore, a high quality with well seasoning treated product was used. With the Breathing details between modules of the timber planks, this potential defect is eliminated.
