| DESIGN NAME: Klasern MOT PRIMARY FUNCTION: Watch INSPIRATION: The MOT watches bridge the two worlds of classic and modern with elegant, timeless design. Inspired by the Bauhaus and Atomic Age designs, the design lays emphasis on functionality and simplicity while still embodying a futuristic look. The designer also incorporates the philosophy of Scandinavian design that is characterized by minimalist and sustainability into the collection. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Powering the MOT is the high precision Swiss quartz movement from Ronda, encased in a 38mm body that is available in silver, black and rose gold. The powder-coated case, which holds a white double-layer dial inside, has a unique profile and invisible lugs, coming with an additional topcoat by using the Physical Vapor Deposition process to improve hardness, scratch and corrosion resistance. Sapphire crystal is used to enhance scratch and shatter resistance of the domed glass. The leather straps are made by craftsmen who take an obsessive approach to quality workmanship. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Pencil and paper sketches evolve into computer constructs featuring the input of designers and engineers until a working plastic model emerges in prototype by three-dimensional printing. A Computer Numerical Control milling machine is then utilized to produce the sample casing from a block of solid steel. Watch dial and hands are designed to suit the case, with the final selection made from the several prototypes. Evaluations, examinations, and study continue until a final design is confirmed, then considerations move to the watch band and packaging phase. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2017 and finished in 2018 in Vietnam and the United States. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: At long last the final prototype is ready for batch production. Swiss movements from Ronda and sapphire crystal glass components await importation. The watch case is mass-produced by our Hongkong partner firm, while leather straps and packaging are made by local Saigon artisans and handicraftsmen. The development process of MOT watches takes over a year, beginning with product designers and engineers questioning just How does this watch express the brand's image? Who will wear it? What materials will be suitable for it? CHALLENGE: The challenge comes with the stainless steel casing. Firstly, there is an invisible lug that is to attach the strap. Secondly, the case must be thick enough to hold the double-layer dial fully inside.
