| DESIGN NAME: Wave Mural PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public Artwork INSPIRATION: For many years the Mirror House in Hanoi downtown was in a critical state of disrepair with oxidized mirrors, a leaking roof and damp walls. Following Thu Thuy's proposal & design, the Hanoi authorities assigned artist Thu Thuy and her New Hanoi Arts Company to renovate the House and transform it into an artistic masterpiece engraved with ceramic mosaic designs. Thu Thuy got the inspiration for design from Ha Long Sea and Truong Sa's waves (Spratly Archipelago) in Vietnam for the entire work. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In march 2017, Thu Thuy painted two Waves paintings by oil and she decided to enlarge the paintings into huge ceramic mosaic mural on the façade wall of Hanoi Mirror House. The Truong Sa Wave mural was created by nearly 300.000 little ceramic mosaic tiles (2x4cm) and accomplished in October 2017. The mural depicts powerful waves giving the entire installation a feeling of unity and wholeness. The aesthetic effects of the wave mural inspires the visitors from the first sight. It became beloved artistic masterpiece and tourist site of Hanoi. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Designed the Truong Sa (Spratly Archipelago) waves for the mural in public space, Thu Thuy's idea aims to promote the beauty of Vietnam sea and raise the love of visitors to protect the Sea. The mural depicts powerful waves giving the entire installation a feeling of unity and wholeness. The aesthetic effects of the wave mural inspires everybody from the first sight. It transformed the dark damp and boring wall into artistic masterpiece. When completed, the mural became beloved touristic place of Hanoi. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Truong Sa Wave mural making started in New Hanoi Arts studio in August 2017 and finished in October 2017 in the Hanoi Mirror House facade wall in the Reunion park in downtown Hanoi . Thu Thuy completed the two Wave paintings by oil on canvas in December 2016 and used them as the sketches of the mural. Now the mural appears in public space of the central park of Hanoi as an amazing and attractive artistic masterpiece. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Following the sketch, we produce the little ceramic mosaic tiles (2x4cm) with different colors. Then we enlarge the sketch in 1:1 size paper and start to do mosaic mural on the floor of our studio. After keeping the surface of ceramic mosaic by large tape, we cut the mural into pieces (1x1m) , bring the pieces to the site and glue them on the wall by glue cement. We use the metal brushes to clean the surface, and fix the connected lines between pieces. Finally, we make colors for slots and clean the surface. The Wave Mural had done! SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Thu Thuy used special techniques of ceramic mosaic making in design for the Truong Sa waves mural : little ceramic mosaic tiles in rectangular shape with dimension of 2x4 cm. Each meter square contains 1200 little ceramic mosaic tiles. Our ceramic mosaic murals are very special and valuable. Its truly unique techniques and creative method of mural making. We can control the abundance of colored ceramic glazes from light blue to dark blue, from light turquoise to dark turquoise,….Any tone from oil painting we can realize into ceramic mosaic. TAGS: Thu Thuy, Truong Sa, Wave, Mural RESEARCH ABSTRACT: When enlarge the wave from small side of oil painting into large mural on the wall, the brushstrokes became abstract streaks in close vision, but when visitor stand about 5m far from the wall, the waves appear in realistic style. Its really Impressive ! Almost the murals in the world are painted by acrylic or spay paints, our ceramic mosaic murals are very special and valuable. Any tone from oil painting we can realize into ceramic mosaic. I am so Happy with this artistic masterpiece of my life !!! CHALLENGE: The first difficult of the project is to convince the Hanoi authority to approve the designs and decide to spend budget to realize the project. The most difficult obstacle in the mural making process is the weather. We worked so hard under the sunshine and hard rain. In the rainy days, we have to use the big canvas to protect the surface of ceramic mosaic mural when the cement glue still wet. We signed the contract with the Hanoi People Committee and we have to keep the exact timeline. Luckily, we accomplish the project in time. NAME: New Hanoi Arts Co.,Ltd PROFILE: New Hanoi Arts Co.,Ltd was established in October 2007 by visual artist Nguyen Thu Thuy. Following Thu Thuy's idea and designs, the Hanoi authorities assigned the New Hanoi Arts Company to complete the Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural project to celebrate the Hanoi Millennium in 2010. From 2007 to 2010, Thu Thuy and New Hanoi Arts collective had completed the long mural (3.85 km long – 6.950m2) and got the Certificate of Guinness World Records for the Largest Ceramic Mosaic in the world. Thu Thuy continues develop several public arts projects in Hanoi and other provinces of Vietnam. In June 2017, Thu Thuy and New Hanoi Arts collective won the Bronze at the 10th International Design Awards (IDA) in Los Angeles (USA) for the mural of Vietnam trees and flowers at Da Nang International airport. |
