| DESIGN NAME: Hanoi Mirror House PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public Artwork INSPIRATION: For many years Hanoi Mirror House was in a critical state of disrepair with oxidized mirrors, a leaking roof and damp walls. Following Thu Thuy's proposal and designs, the Hanoi authorities assigned the New Hanoi Arts Company to renovate the House and transform it into an artistic masterpiece engraved with ceramic mosaic designs. Before June 2017, all the Mirror house was a dark, dirty and damp concrete construction, Thu Thuy designed to cover all the construction by colorful and bright ceramic mosaic with Ocean theme from exterior to interior, from walls to floor and ceiling. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: From June to October 2017, Thu Thuy and New Hanoi Arts collective had been renovated and completed the Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mirror House Decoration by 800m2 of little ceramic mosaic tiles and reliefs on the facades and interior of the building with the theme “Vietnam Ocean”. Upon entering the Mirror House, the visitor is swept to the bottom of the ocean, surrounded by vibrant sea animals while walking on a wide array of colored ceramic pebbles and reliefs. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Before June 2017, all the Mirror house was a dark, dirty and damp concrete construction. Thu Thuy gave birth the idea to cover all the construction by colorful and bright ceramic mosaic Ocean from exterior to interior, from walls to floor and ceiling. When designed the floor for Mirror maze, Thu Thuy discovered an interesting effect of the Mirror maze : the mirrors reflect and replicate the ceramic mosaic decoration into numerous and large images. The mirrors add a sense of magic and intrigue to the whole experience. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Hanoi Mirror House located in the Reunion park in downtown Hanoi. From June to October 2017 Thu Thuy and New Hanoi Arts collective had been renovated, decorated and transformed it from blank concrete construction into colorful ceramic mosaic ocean house. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Thu Thuy used special techniques of ceramic mosaic making in design for the Interior Design of the Mirror House: little ceramic mosaic tiles in square shape with dimension of 2.2 cm x 2.2 cm and ceramic reliefs ( to create sea animals and plants), ceramic stones and pebbles (for floor). SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The floor inside the building (300m2) were covered with colored ceramic pebbles and reliefs. The walls and ceiling were decorated with ceramic mosaic murals and 3D paintings. TAGS: Nguyen Thu Thuy, Interior Design, Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mirror House RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Vietnam has more than 3.400km of beach and more than 4.000 islands. Ha Long Bay was recognized as the World Nature Heritage by UNESCO from 1994. Thu Thuy had been in Ha Long bay for many times. Especially, she went to Truong Sa (Spratly Archipelago) for five times to complete her public artworks there. She took many photos for research and her designs. Thu Thuy's design ideas aim to promote the beauty of Vietnam sea and raise the love of visitors to protect sea animals and plants. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of my design activity is to control the design from the concrete details to the wholeness. The house is very big with total length of 60m and the walls have an average height of 6,5m. The wall forming the snail shell without windows is ideal to decorate with ceramic mosaic murals. But it was really difficult when have to decide about symbol images for the murals. Thanks to my passion to the Ocean and several trips to the sea and islands, I have many inspirations for creative ideas and designs for the exterior and interior of the building. NAME: New Hanoi Arts Co.,Ltd PROFILE: New Hanoi Arts Co.,Ltd was established in October 2007 by visual artist Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy to accomplish the Public Arts projects for the city. From 2007 to 2010, Thu Thuy and New Hanoi Arts company completed the Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural, which won the Guinness World Record for the largest ceramic mosaic in the world. According to Thu Thuy's ideas and designs, New Hanoi Arts company continues to develop and complete several public arts projects in Hanoi and other cities. |
