DESIGN NAME: The Visible Secret
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Illustration Book
INSPIRATION: Hong Kong YWCA was delighted to share the research findings and case study results of the Family-based Support for Children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) Project. An illustration book, The Visible Secret, was released to stimulate its readers to perseverance and appreciate the love of the parents and encouraged the SEN children to be self-assured and brave on facing the upcoming challenges.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The book illustrated the life stories of an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder child and his family, not only helped public to understand the practical problems faced by the family, but also to empathise with the special educational needs children and their parents regarding their struggles by using different colour filters to look through the inner world of the characters: red reflects the SEN child, green reflects their parents, and blue reflects public in the book. It is expected that the public can have more understanding and acceptance.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Three coloured transparent sheets to look through the inner world of the characters: Red reflects the SEN child, Green reflects their parents, and Blue reflects public in the book. It is expected that the public can have more understanding and acceptance.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 270mm x Height 265mm with foam printing on book cover in order to increase the hand-touch sense for ADHD children.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Its target group was children with special educational needs and their families. Over 200 families were served. Service attendance exceeded 7,500 and each family enjoyed over 100 hours of services. The research findings from Chinese University of Hong Kong has shown that such model is effective in helping parents with special educational needs kids to cope with their stress and enhance their social network.
CHALLENGE: Apart from the research results, occupational therapist, social workers and parents involved also shared their experiences and tips for training SEN children. Different colour filters to look through the inner world of the characters: Red reflects the SEN child, Green reflects their parents, and Blue reflects public in the book. It is expected that the public can have more understanding and acceptance.
