| DESIGN NAME: Lify PRIMARY FUNCTION: Herbal Brewer INSPIRATION: Inspired by traditional Chinese herbal tea drinking culture in Hong Kong and Southern China from hundreds of years ago, where it has been a time-honoured health drink that helps people to feel better with various mixed herbal tea blends. Research shows that younger generations are becoming more health conscious.The motive is to develop a modernised solution of brewing Chinese herbal tea with convenience and create a personalised user-centric healthy lifestyle experience. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Lify is the world's first connected single serve wellness drinking device that delivers personalised herbal drinks at your fingertips. It requires no prior preparation and knowledge in brewing a perfect cup of herbal tea. It is your wellness companion giving you insights on what and how to drink to live a healthy lifestyle. Lify learns about you, give personalised recommendations, weather-based drinking tips as a integrated preventive healthcare solution for active citizens. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: User can start by placing a herbal disc vertically into the slot by pushing backwards the handle. Then, user can either choose to press the cross button and start automatic brewing process; or personalise the brewing formula through the phone Application. When user feels in need for a herbal tea cure, user can make a quick diagnosis in App and user will be recommended to drink a certain herbal tea blend. User can then brew the selected herbal tea and personalise the brewing parameters i.e infusion time, temperature and brewing volume. User can also purchase herbal discs in-App and have them delivered at home. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The projected started in June 2017 in Hong Kong and finished in February 2018, and was exhibited in various consumer product fairs and design shows in 2018. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The brewer is designed to integrate technology, material interactions and user experience. The seamless one-touch cross button at the front panel of the brewer is made with IMD production method. The mirror-like finishing of the front panel and top handle creates an reflective effect. The side panels of the brewer are made up of semi-translucent matt plastic, creating an almost obscure effect hat reveals the embedded LED mood light stripes. The goal is to create an object that can fit well in every home, and tells a story as an interactive companion. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 140 x 350 x 270 for the brewer overall size, 6g of ingredients in each tea disc with 5cm diameter. TAGS: iOT herbal tea brewer, single-serve beverage machine, wellness herbal companion, App controlled herbal tea brewer RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Qualitative research on healthy lifestyle habits; market research on herbal tea consumption globally ; interviews with targeted audience and industrial players to gain insights and generate design solutions; research on traditional herbal tea brewing method; conducted experiments on herbal ingredients testing in herbal disc and quality outcome; research on relationship between emotion health and therapeutic lighting; researched on herbal disc packaging material; experiment on different brewing formula; prototypes to test form, functions; UX testing with demo App. CHALLENGE: Main challenge is the 'internet of things' communication between machine and App. The interaction between the brewer and App is designed to be seamless and user-friendly. The App recommends various herbal tea blends to the user based on their habits and conditions, and once selected by the user, the App transmits the brewing command and brewing parameters to the brewer through Wifi.
