DESIGN NAME: Education Community Hub
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Study center and community center
INSPIRATION: The main theme of the church is “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbour as yourself.” This is being used as an underlying design concept. Simple “gabled” house motifs are employed as a representation of neighbors or neighborhood throughout, including the cross at the main hall, reception, bookshelves, door openings, display alcoves, etc.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project is to renovate an entire floor space into an after-school education / community hub for Yuen Kei Alliance Church at Yuen Long, Hong Kong. The client wants to create a space that is about love, family + community, open for kids as well as for folks of all ages.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Due to a tight budget, we try to do a design that is more pragmatic yet warm, friendly and contemporary to the local families that the hub serves. We carefully made choices of materials, textures and colours.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design started in February 2017 and the construction was finished in July 2017. The school was opened soon after the education license was obtained in October 2017. The location is in downtown Yuen Long in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Due to the low ceiling height of the premise, open ceiling is being used and is painted black. Vinyl with wood grain is used for the flooring material to cater for the heavy traffic. Floral patterned tiles are used at waiting area which doubles as a cafe/pantry for parents waiting to pick up their kids. Other materials include black metal trims, corian counter tops, vinyl cushioning at some of walls, etc. to provide durability and safety.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The hub takes up an entire floor of around 400 square metres.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We did research on different community hubs in the neighbourhood and worked closely with the church to come up with a design that is suitable for the kids of the age range that the premise is targeted toward.
CHALLENGE: The major hurdle that we faced was to obtain an education license from the government before this hub can be opened for operation. We had to ensure that fire regulations, disable provisions, etc. are fully catered for in order to get the approval.
