| DESIGN NAME: Big or Small PRIMARY FUNCTION: Poster Calendar INSPIRATION: There are lots of calendars in the market, most of them are formatted in a traditional way. Therefore we create a calendar that with the Sic bo concept which appears on gambling table and make fun of it. That will be very interesting when combined with the Sic Bo concept and carry out holiday maximization by combining the public holidays with your limited annual holidays through the year. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We had been taught counting months on knuckles by Math teacher where we were children. Therefore we combine it with the Sic bo concept which appears on gambling table. We understood employees concerns about when they get paid and how to take the longest holidays with the least annual leave as we are employees too. Therefore we tailor made the 2018 calendar for them to carry out holiday maximization by combining the public holidays with their limited annual holidays through the year. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: First of all we want to create a special calendar, with the concept that all the employees will concern. How to maximise the holidays? In Hong Kong most employees get 10 to 20 annual holidays a year, with some government stated public holidays. So it is important to how to combine the public holidays with your limited annual holidays through the year. Secondly we need a creative idea. We found that Sic bo in gambling is interesting to present the idea of betting on your holidays to maximise your winning ! So we did research on visuals and format of a Sic bo board and developed into graphical approach. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2017 in Hong Kong and finished in January 2018 in Hong Kong. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 140 gsm Fedrigoni UK Splendorgel white paper SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Calendar: 600(w) x 460(h) Envelope: 160(w) x 240(h) TAGS: Graphic, Design, Creative, Gamble, Calendar, Fun, Holidays RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the brainstorming stage we focused on how to adapt the ideas of gambling into calendar graphic. While most of them were quite complicated and hard to transform into information presentation technically. Then we tried to modify our design and to develop an easy to read content structure, which people could see all the holidays in a flash. After that our next step was the creative theme to design the calendar. We did a lot of research about gambling. We found an interesting game from the Chinese gambling method Sci bo and adopted the idea into our calendar design and it worked very well. CHALLENGE: We found that it was quite difficult to adapt the gambling concept into our design. It was because most of the elements have strong visual identities that are not easy to mix with modern design philosophy. Therefore we put a lot of effort in choosing a suitable gambling element that can transform into an attractive visual. Luckily we found and picked the Sci bo game that delivered the message very well and made us achieved our goal. We also tried very hard in developing the calendar structure. There were rounds of modifications from a complicated form into a simple structure and to a more user-friendly structure.
