| DESIGN NAME: You Yu PRIMARY FUNCTION: Folding Stool INSPIRATION: The starting point of this project is design a beautiful folding stool. Which means the stool is no longer put in the corner or storeroom after being used, it can be a decorative item displayed at the room. To achieve this goal, we need to find a shape to keep it beautiful before and after folding. After referring from Chinese culture, we find fish can fit this requirement which is symbolized lucky and wealth in tradition. We hope to give it a good meaning hanging on the wall. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: You Yu is a design project to tap Chinese culture. In China "yu" is fish, "you" is own, so "you yu" means lucky and wealthy. So we make it the appearance of fish when it unfolds. You Yu is not only a stool for sitting but also a decoration hanging on the wall. And it can be folded for storage and carrying easily. The stool surface is made of solid wood inlaid with a hand-painted porcelain chip, which endue with cultural characteristics. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: You Yu is the shape of a fish when fully open, its surface is designed as the head and legs are designed as the tail. Its decorative surface can be displayed when placed flat hanging on the wall. Also it can be folded simply for carrying and packing. You Yu is not only a stool saving storage space and has a positive decorative effect to living environment. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Stool surface is made of solid wood, using machine processing combined with mortise -tenon joint connection technology. The decorative chip inlaid in the middle of the stool is made of porcelain with hand-painted design. The legs of You Yu have solid wood mortise -tenon structure and fixed with metal screws. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Product dimensions: width 314 mm x depth 310mm x Height 490mm. TAGS: folding stool,decoration, homeware, furniture, DIFFER, Gudao Design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the design work of this project, we studied a large number of solid wood processing technology, summarized the storage structure of various types of folded furniture, analyzed people usage habits, and conducted in-depth thinking on Chinese traditional culture. CHALLENGE: It is the most difficult part of the whole project to distill the fish characteristic and keep the rational use of the folded structure of a stool. We need to ensure that our products are designed according to the product features set by the users, combined with the fish element design. Design work often take this one point at the expense of another point, want it to have the most simplified folding, stable force structure, beautiful unique shape and a perfect story to convey.
