DESIGN NAME: Enlighten
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart desk lamp
INSPIRATION: Our workspaces have changed. With emerging digitized tools, we control our work apps and other tools like calendar on the same screen. We repeat 'Alt Tab' to switch apps to find information, which interrupts workflow.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Enlighten is a smart desk lamp, consisting of two projectors covering the wall and the desk separately and a depth camera that trace users’ movements.
By turning any surface into a smart surface, users are able to display contents around the desk and control camera app, memo, and click actions with fingers.
Enlighten enables users to improve work efficiency and enhance privacy when turned off, all while keeping the desk clean and neat.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When you tap and hold the top part of the body, the body will be elevated and projector will turn on. There are two adjustable projectors which cover deskside and wallside separately and a depth camera will trace user’s movement and actions.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in April 2017 and finished in September 2017 in Pasadena, CA, USA.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We wanted to make a 'Control Tower' for our desk work space. Since users are dealing with various information and tools, we had to find which materials they use and how can we improve the user experience. So we practiced several direct user interviews and various rehearsals to find best way to handle all of the informations around users.
CHALLENGE: Our main goal was to make user's workflow better. So we had to consider what is the best way to handle streams of information at the same time and what will be better interaction between our project and the users.
