DESIGN NAME: Shoulder Umbrella
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hand-free Umbrella
INSPIRATION: Walking through the streets of a bustling city in a rainy season, I often see such a fragment: people have multi-task to do while holding an umbrella. Because of the lack of concentration, they can not handle the umbrella very well, causing some accidents. So I began to think: Is the structure of the traditional umbrella not suitable for the pace of modern life and lack of good user experience? Does the traditional umbrella have the possibility of being partially disrupted?
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Should-brella is a disruptive and safer umbrella that adapts to the modern lifestyle, liberating users' hands and improving the usage efficiency. Its shoulder support structure changes umbrella's feature, increases stability and provides a new ergonomic experience. The main focus of this project is simplifying the using process so that user can use it naturally. This product was designed for people of almost all ages who use the umbrella frequently and need to do many things when using it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The main design of this umbrella is the handle. The umbrella handle is divided into two parts. The lower part is similar to the traditional umbrella handle, which is fixed. The upper half can be controlled by the thumb to rotate. It can be pushed through the shoulder and rise to a specific support position, lock the user's shoulder. Its shape is an irregular organic form which deduced from tests of prototypes and the human body, stressing ergonomics. It can closely fit the shape of people's shoulder to ensure the stability of support.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2017 in New York and finished in May 2017 in New York.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The development process started with the excavation of pain points. Then I did thorough market research, finding out the limitation of existing products. Through the study of different people, I found that some people use shoulder such to share the pressure. So I started to brainstorming, conceiving the structure possibilities of using the shoulder to support the umbrella. I made the initial prototypes with clay and after the force analysis, I used 3D printing to make intermediate prototypes. I tested a variety of users and gradually found out the best organic shape of the handle that can tightly attach to the surface of shoulders and eventually got the final prototype.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part is how to find out the best organic shape of the handle that can tightly attach to the surface of shoulders. Also, it was very hard to simplify the user process and reduce the limitation of hands as much as possible.
