DESIGN NAME: Askew
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bookshelf
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the Askew was to take a simple box, or rectangle and create visual interest. In the case of the bookshelf, the three individual boxes are balancing on each other. It has an aspect of whimsy to it that's fun.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Askew series is about creating visual interest out of rectangles. We all live in, and work around boxes every day. The Askew series is about being surprised by this shape and how interesting it can be when tilted just a bit.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product realization for Askew bookshelf was fairly straight forward. The only problem to solve was the joining of the boxes. The decision was made to use small wedges as a mounting plate and using dowels as a mechanical fastener.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 508mm x Depth 305mm x Height 1220mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The biggest issue to deal with was how to attach the cubes together. Initially I researched extrusions which could have been the final solution but the material change didn't seem to fit the aesthetic. The decision to wood blocks was decided upon as best, final solution.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to "how do you get people to notice a box, or a rectangle". Simple! Balance them at 30 degrees!
