DESIGN NAME: 12 Months
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Book
INSPIRATION: Our goal was to present the Hungarian and international cook book market with a highly functional title that lives up to the top standards by its quality, artistic values in graphic design, photography, home food presentation, even tableware, which is why we also recruited a ceramics artist in the team. The lead in the content was to focus on environmental conscious approach, easy navigation and complexity in covering the topic, while in the design to stay modern, minimalistic as well as timeless, stay close to nature both with the use of materials and the patterns. The inspiration was nature itself and its produces throughout all 12 months.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 12 Months is a heavy and complex coffee table book on seasonal salads that feature artistic food and landscape photography, a minimalistic graphic design with analogue fruit and vegetable prints, while some of the recipes are plated on hand made ceramics made especially for the project by an acknowledged Hungarian ceramics artist. The chapters follow the changes of seasons on our plates and in nature parallelly throughout an entire year to enhance seasonality, therefore it was photographed for the period of nine months. Both the content and the design was crafted carefully to meet all the requirements of a premium category cookbook.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The cookbook opens with the author's introduction and the presentation of the theme including the role of the book and how to use it. A forty-page practical information package follows on what ingredients to use and how when making salads. The content is unfolded through 12 chapters dedicated to each month of the year. The chapters open with a list of local and import seasonal produces of each month and 8 seasonal recipes. The book closes with an index of ingredients and a content list. The theme in overall enhances health and environment conscious choices through promoting consumption of seasonal local food and zero waste.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Budapest, in January 2017 with the production of the manuscript. In March the food and landscape photography began that span through all four seasons to document the changes of the landscape throughout the country. Shootings ended in October. In the meantime the art directions of graphic design evolved and the production of the salad specific ceramics began that we used for some of the photos and later as a merchandising brand product line. The website and marketing communication launched when the book hit the printing house mid-October. The final product reached the market on November 10, 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For each chapter, representing a month of the year, we applied fruit and vegetable patterns typical of the given month to reflect on the verbal content. We used analogue techniques: colour painted the cross sections of the ingredients then scanned the prints of the vegetable stamps to create patterns carrying the shape and inner structure of the produces. We used crafted pictograms to ease the navigation amongst the recipes for those with special diets while indicated storage options, as well. For delicate technical details on the cover we used silver and matte black hot foil, blind embossing and a bright yellow canvas hard cover binding. The end sheets got a radiating purple tone, an unofficial identity colour that is a secret favourite of the author.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Internet research was conducted on the main group of ingredients used in the recipes from vegetables to oils, nuts, edible flowers, etc., to give an overview on the possible ways of incorporating them in salads also on their vital effects. The findings were assembled in a forty-page practical content at the opening of the book and at the beginning of each chapter where the seasonal produces are discussed.
CHALLENGE: It was difficult to battle with the weather issues while trying to track all the classic landscape changes throughout production in the time frame given while coordinating the artistic work of all cooperators who were also working parallel on other projects.
