DESIGN NAME: Pincher
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Salt and pepper dispenser
INSPIRATION: More often than not, we use salt and pepper together but have a separate dispenser for each. We wanted to redesign the experience so that users didn't have to misplace either dispenser, or require the use of any mechanisms and reduce the messiness of refilling.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Salt and pepper are rarely used separately. Pincher combines both in a smaller, one handed and more intuitive design. To switch between salt and pepper, simply flip and then pinch the outer walls to allow the seasoning of choice to flow. The harder one pinches, the more seasoning will flow.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As the dispenser is always sealed until pressure is exerted on its walls (pressure forces a small incision in the bottom to open up), it gives a user much more control over the flow of the salt or pepper and makes it less messy to refill than conventional dispensers.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Developed further from 'Flip' starting in March 2017 and ending in August 2017

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project is a further development from a previous product of ours, 'Flip' that was inspired by the flexible properties of silicone. By studying the design of rubber toys that make noise such as clown noses and rubber ducks, we applied a similar approach to our salt and pepper dispenser with favourable results.
CHALLENGE: During the testing phase, the design team observed that users tend to pinch the mid-section of Pincher which, when full, prevented the spices from flowing. To solve this issue, designers developed a more intuitive design by adding ergonomic indicators to either end of Pincher.
