INSPIRATION: Realtors send out flyers all the time to reach potential clients. Most times these advertising flyers end up with junk mail. To edge out the competition, more realtors have adopted 360 degree home tours using virtual reality technology. While realtors are at the forefront of this technology, they still rely on the use of mailers to advertise their brand and services. We were inspired to re-purpose the home listing mailer into a vr viewer to take 360 degree property tours any time and anywhere.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Angry Mailer (T.A.M.) is the first of its kind, ultra-portable, and eco-friendly virtual reality (vr) viewer. This unique vr viewer ships as a mailer, changes into a pop-art paper doll, and folds into a vr viewer. Once folded as a vr viewer, users will need to download vr apps and attach their smartphones to the viewer using (2) rubber bands. In this 360 Open House series, potential buyers can take 360 degree home tours by converting the home listing flyer into a vr viewer.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The kit is easy to assemble. Instruction and video link on assembling the vr viewer are printed on the product. Users will need to download the vr app to their smartphone. With over 1 million vr apps, there's something for everyone.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To maintain the structural integrity as a vr viewer, we use cardboard and heavy card stock. The vr viewer comes in various prints and can be customized for branding.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We first had to understand the intrinsic design concept of a mailer and a vr viewer. The design for the mailer has to meet the standard dimensions for shipping packages and have a large enough printable space to communicate the message. For the vr viewer, the viewing quality is essential. This sets the placement of the lenses and its distance from the smartphone display. If the lenses are set too close to the smartphone, users may experience discomfort. To make it an eco-friendly design without use of glue, we had to develop the vr viewer to lock into shape through slit opening system.
CHALLENGE: Our main challenge was developing a strong design as a vr viewer. We needed to figure out a way to attach the smartphone to the vr viewer while maintaining its viewing quality. Through iterations of origami studies, we came up with a viable solution to attach the smartphone to the back panel with use of rubber bands.
