DESIGN NAME: Goldilocks
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Personal Locker
INSPIRATION: In a country that relies on service staff that walks in & out of homes several times a day, it is natural to feel anxious about your valuables. Highly valuable items are placed in the high security of vaults and safes, but some items such as wallets, jewelry, even some watches remain unprotected because of the frequency of their use. This inspired the design team to come up with a product that could offer convenience albeit at a lower level of security, for storing everyday valuables.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Goldilocks is a compact vault for everyday valuables and represents a new category in the domain of home security. Reflecting user behavior and need, Goldilocks brings high convenience and easy access to a category governed by performance and security. While highly valuable objects are stored in safes, frequently used items (wallets, mobile phones etc) are prone to theft or misplacement. Goldilocks offers an optimal balance between convenience and security for such frequently used items.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The overall size & weight make the product handy for placement anywhere convenient, completely eliminating the need for in-situ installation. The motion sensor alarm safeguards the product from being carried away, and can be disabled when intentionally moving the product. Easy to access external terminals provide standby power in case of battery failure and enable unlocking in every situation. An invisible touch panel lights up only on use, disguise its appearance; and the power icon and engraved logo make it resemble a router more than a safe - making it inconspicuous and hidden in plain sight. These features give it the desired level of security, balancing its high access & easy reach as it rests in plain sight on a counter top.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2014 in Mumbai, India. The product was launched in the Indian market in August 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Usually, safes are installed in Indian homes by cutting into walls and through floors, making serious modifications to the home environment. Goldilocks, with its unique motion sensor technology, does away with installation requirements altogether, using technology to present a more integrated and responsible solution.
Goldilocks is designed for manufacturing with minimum tooling operations. The assembly features neat integration of plastic parts (for the interface panel and interiors) into the sheet metal enclosure.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 286mm x Depth 302mm x Height 78mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Future Factory carried out months of user research, that proved that valuables could be regarded to require different levels of security. Highly valuable items are placed in the high security of vaults and safes, but some items such as wallets, jewelry, even some watches remain unprotected because of the frequency of their use. A product that could offer convenience albeit at a lower level of security would be a very relevant product for such items that cause anxiety.
CHALLENGE: In a country that relies on service staff that walks in & out of homes several times a day, it is natural to feel anxious about your valuables. Yet, home safes are used in less than 1% of Indian homes. Goldilocks is a new category of electronic homes safes that attempts to change this. The design challenge was to find the correct balance between convenience and security, through a new product format.
