DESIGN NAME: The Artist House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bar with Aqua Farm
INSPIRATION: The form of the Artist House and Aqua Farm comes from the Belgian farm where the craft beer is made. The shape is translated into the 5 senses that The Artist co-creates with their partners. By exploring the five senses, people get to touch, see, hear, smell and taste the process of beer making. The design of The Artist House is cultural, sustainable and flexible. People and their unique experiences help to transform the space over time.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Artist House is a multipurpose bar to explore craft beers through cocreation and experiences. The Artist House has the first farm to table concept in Hong Kong. It lowers carbon footprint by providing fresh and local ingredients. The space majorly used reclaimed materials on wall and furniture to reduce its carbon footprint. The mechanical equipment is carefully positioned to reduce operational cost and energy consumption. The use of movable furniture, customized storage, and creative lighting also helps to increase the flexibility of the space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Patrons can visit the brewery, coffee bar, aqua farm, smell station, VR station, bottle customization and presentation room. On a daily basis, the client also uses the Artist House as their headquarter.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design started in January 2017 and was built in February 2018 in Hong Kong.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Artist House has an on site aqua farm for beer ingredients. The comparison between hydroponics and conventional farming has proved that on-site hydroponics has a much less carbon footprint. It uses 90% less water, requires 60% less fertilizer, and has 11 times more yield on a 80% less land.
CHALLENGE: Farm is traditionally an industrial zone accordingly to local law. We were creative with space organization to create a scientific farm inside a retail zone.
