DESIGN NAME: Curvy Chambers
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Apartment
INSPIRATION: The layout composition drew inspiration from the nearby secret waterfall in Pok Fu Lam, which was discovered during a site visit. The idea of the continuously flowing water and the way it is formed by the topography of the natural rocks, became a metaphor for two juxtaposed elements.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Bean Buro was tasked with refurbishing a 1,600sqft residential apartment at Bel Air apartments in Pok Fu Lam Hong Kong, for a young family with two children whom would relocate permanently from Oxford UK to settle in Hong Kong, at a location that is close to the ocean for improved wellbeing and tranquility.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The first element is a curvy blue volume that forms half of the apartment; it begins its stream as a bookshelf with random niches from the lounge into a corridor that conceals the children room and guest room, and flows towards the master bedroom and forms a storage volume with a seating niche. The second element is a rectilinear grey concrete volume that forms the other half of the apartment; it begins from the entrance foyer that forms the backdrop of the dinning area, and takes its solid form towards the master bedroom.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2017 in Hong Kong and finished in October 2017 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: An innovative solution is created to address the relationship between the parents spaces which are the master bedroom suite and the study room, the children spaces, and the common social spaces. In order to create privacy for the parents, a concealed pocket sliding door can be pulled out from the concrete volume to divide the master bedroom suite and study room away from the rest of the apartment.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The sliding door has acoustic separation to ensure the noise from the children play spaces will not penetrate to the study room where the parent has to carry out focused works. To further increase privacy for the study room, an additional sliding door is designed to partition the study room from the master bedroom suite, this will allow flexibility for one parent to be sleeping in the master bedroom while another might be working in the study.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The concrete panels used in the project were prefabricated from France which could be easily cut and assembled quickly, cutting down on site construction time. A long continuous LED light strip accentuate the concrete panels, controlled by the overall scene lighting control system for the apartment.
CHALLENGE: The overall floor finish is a ceramic tile with wooden texture is used for the flooring which is durable as a hard surface but provides visual warmth to the space. The tiles also form the wall finish for the dinning area, creating a comfortable setting with a pendant light and an extendable table for six to ten people. In the children room and guest/baby room, a writable surface is created on a full height full width wall using a high quality chalk board laminate that can be composed into different wall patterns and colours.

NAME: Bean Buro
PROFILE: The studio is an emerging architecture and interiors practice from London and Paris, led by Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui, with a team of international designers to provide architecture, interior, installation, furniture, product and masterplanning design services. The Hong Kong studio was opened in mid 2013.
The diversity of the practice with its collaborators reinforces a core vision for the practice: to respond to the exchanges of global cultural development factors, incorporating overlapping design disciplines in the social, economical and technological production of urban spaces. With a strong believe in architecture being an emotional, spatial experience produced by both the user and the author, the design methodology involves the observation, speculation and analysis of contextual narratives. These narratives, or ‘stories’, generate dynamic exchanges of forces, resulting in inventive interventions inherent with humanistic delights.
The practice has since produced a string of successful architecture and interior projects for reputable developers such as Grosvenor, Nan Fung Group and Sun Hung Kai, as well as commercial companies such as Uber, Leo Burnett, Warner Music, Kerry Logistics, and has been nominated for The Prodigy INDE. Awards 2017, 3 nominations in Archdaily Architecture Awards China 2017, awarded Silver Winner in the Asia Pacific Interior Design Award 2015, Runner Up in Architizer A+ Awards 2015, multiple Gold and Silver awards in the A’ Design Awards in three consecutive years, and Finalist Winner of the 13th Modern Decoration International Media Award. The studio has a rigorous methodology in research by design, using high quality drawings and models that explore cultural narratives and the humanistic aspects of design. The works have been featured in Archdaily awards, Interior Design NYC, ID+C, Design Anthology, ELLE, Perspective, Domus, FRAME and Wallpaper* Magazine.
