| DESIGN NAME: Kebrick PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sand construction set INSPIRATION: While spending a few days at Kep Beach, the mother of a kid wished for not bulky beach toys that would make traveling with them easier. After an in depth research period, and conversations with parents, our goal centered on developing a toy that would also further boost children's creativity, while building sandcastles. By presenting kids with very basic, interconnectable pieces, they are free to build sand & snow bricks hence, its name KEBRICK in the shapes that their creativity craves. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Kebrick redefines beach and snow toys with basic interconnectable pieces. After an in depth research period, and conversations with parents and child development experts, we developed a toy that boosts children's creativity aged 4-6, while busy at play. The children freely build the three basic geometric shapes, triangle, square and circle with the molds to any shapes their creativity craves. The individual shapes fit nicely together, for place saving storage. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Kebrick comes totally unassembled. Kids just have to get the pieces out of the bag and let their creativity run wild. By interconnecting the pieces, they can create different shapes; starting from the three basic geometric forms triangle, square and circle to more complex ones. Once they put together the desired shape, children only need to fill in the resulting mold with damp sand or snow and slide it up to reveal the finished shape in the sand or snow. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Kebrick was developed between 2016 and 2017 in Madrid, Spain. After an intense design development process including participatory design activities, iterative prototyping, testing with users and experts, production will start during the spring of 2018. The first round of commercialization will be in the European and North American markets. It will be exhibited in January 2019 in Nurnberg Germany, at the Spielwarenmesse Toy Fair and in February 2019 at New York USA at The North American Toy Fair. Children in our main users group have very specific learning needs. So, our research focused on their psychomotricity needs and healthy intellectual challenges. Our toy satisfies these requisites in a fun and creative way. Also, we avoided the hassle of carrying traditional beach toys. Kebrick is an easily transported learning experience. CHALLENGE: We took a hard look at beach toys from a design evolution standpoint: how they have evolved throughout time to adapt to the users' needs. After that, we identified our core users, children age 4 to 6, and we studied and researched all variables around their playing at the beach and snow habits, needs, and challenges. Thus, we went back to the basics with a set of pieces that, thanks to their versatility and endless possibilities, encourages children to form shapes and designs without limitation.
