DESIGN NAME: Shoka Bell
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart Bicycle Accessory
INSPIRATION: Shoka Bell was inspired by international city bicycle culture. It gives satisfying answers to safety and navigation problems with style.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Shoka Bell is a light, a bell, a navigation device and theft protection in one device. It uses smart technologies to detect your position (GPS) and movement (motion sensors). It communicates with the user through the LED-matrix screen on top and with the speakers in front. It shows the user's position with it's position LED-lights in front, and it can also make various sounds, as a bell, with the front-facing speakers. It also connects to the user's smartphone to send notifications about the position of their bike.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Shoka Bell features eight sounds controllable by an intuitive joystick. Honk for a car, politely ding for pedestrians, or even record your own message. Shoka automatically adjusts to ambient noise so you can always be heard. Create custom ringtones and download even more sounds free through the app. Simply connect Shoka Bell to your smartphone and choose a destination. Then navigate through a city by glancing at your Shoka Bell’s indicator arrows. You’ll also be warned of busy intersections you’ll face ahead. Shoka Bell includes an effective front light. Designed specifically for city use, the 8 front-facing LEDs shine bright enough to get you noticed without blinding other cyclists or drivers. The light automatically adjusts to ambient light so you can always be seen. Shoka Bell will alert you if your bike is moved. The clamp that remains attached to your bars acts as a motion sensor. When it detects movement it alerts you wirelessly by ringing the Shoka Bell up to 250m away.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For prototyping, we used several technologies during the design procecss. In the ideation phase, we used paper modeling and foam modeling. During the concept design phase we used 3D printing. In the end of concept design and during detail design we created milled and painted prototypes made of plastic and metal materials to show the final quality of the product.
Final product:
Injection moulded, metal coated casing with die casted parts.
Smart technologies: BLE, GPS
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 40 mm x Depth 100 mm x Height 100 mm
TAGS: iot, bicycle, bike, city, gps, navigation, theft protection, ble, bluetooth
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research was based on the community Shoka Bell has built before and during the development. All phases of the design process were published and rated by the community. A/B testing was carried out to select best idaes and best concepts.
During the concept design phase, we conducted a thorough technological research in cooperation with the electronics engineers. Sound chambers were optimised by audio engineers. Joystick placement was tested with 3D-printed mockups on small control groups. Designs were carried out by different ergonomic approaches.
CHALLENGE: The greatest design challenge was to integrate so many functions into one compact, stylish device. By complying the loudspeker grill with the light and screen pixel matrix, we were able to design one seamless surface that serves as loudspeaker outlet, position light housing and also a screen. All this on one simple, coherent and cool shape.
