PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was conceived and realised in Paraty, Brazil 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Canela for Two was handmade from solid hard woods using traditional woodworking methods. The wood in this case is reclaimed Canela Preta salvaged from an old colonial house. Inspired by Kintsukuroi, the Japanese method of using gold to repair broken pottery in order to express its history, copper rings were used to cover the holes where the nails were hammered in over 200 years ago.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research was carried out into various aspects of Canela for Two's design. From a comfort point of view, the position of the backrest was tested to find an ideal height for the average person without being too high to cause discomfort to the spine or too low to offer decent support. A number of options were also considered for how to fill the nail holes, the copper rings with a circular cut of the same wood in its centre was chosen as it provides a subtle yet striking feature which matches the copper supports used in the backrest.
CHALLENGE: The joinery posed a slight challenge in that it was a requirement to maintain a delicate structure in order to achieve a light and minimal appearance. A combination of finger joints and wedged mortise and tenons were used, these not only provided Canela for Two with a rigid and highly resistant structure but they are also interesting and attractive details in themselves.
